If they are indeed places, then heaven and hell would have to be in a completely different reality where earthly concepts such as light,hot,cold,pain may not apply as that other reality may not share the same laws of physics. I think that they descriptions of heaven and hell in the abrahamic religions are metaphors. I had dedicated a lens on explaining,with evidence from the holy books, as to why they are metaphors.
