The great Heist movies
A heist film is a film that has a complicated plot built around a group of people trying to steal something. Versions with comic elements are often called caper movies. They could be described as the start of heist stories in film history. Typically there are many plot twists, and film focuses on the characters' attempts to formulate a plan, carry it out, and escape with da goods. There is often a nemesis that must be thwarted, who is either a figure of authority, or a former partner who turned on the group or one of its members. Below you can see my top 5 picks.
Heat
Heat is by far one of the greatest heist movies ever made, if not one of the greatest movies ever made. Heist boasts one of the greatest casts in movie history, pitting Robert Deniro and Al Pacino as rivals. This was also Val Kilmer's last great movie before he went nuts. In one of the great scenes of the movie, Michael Mann shocked movie goers with the violence and realistic feel of the gun battle at the bank heist.
HEAT - Downtown Shootout
This is the famous shootout scene from the film HEAT, Directed by Michael Mann. This clip starts upon Sizemore leaving the Bank and ends when he is killed.

Reservoir Dogs
Reservoir Dogs is unique in heist movies in that it never shows the actual heist. Quentin Tarantino burst onto the scene with Reservoir Dogs showcasing some pretty ingenious writing. A large portion of the film is built around the planning of the heist, but the inensity builds after the heist fails. One of the best.

Oceans 11
Oceans 11 is a stylish sleek thiller that spends most of it's time poking you in the ribs and winking at you throught the movie. Although most of what happens is highly unlikely, the movie is saved by it's steller cast. George Clooney leads the cast, and reminds us that there are still some great actors left.
The Sting
As far as heist movies go this one deviates a bit from the main path leading us into territory mostly not visited in the genre. There are no strong armed-men with guns or cracking of safes but rather huge confidence scams and wagers placed upon wagers that depend on one another. The whole things is like a house of cards that could come falling down at any minute.
Dog Day Afternoon
Rarely do heist films deeply explore the reason behind the main characters desire for money- a sex change operation. That is what makes this 1975 film so different from any other hiest film ever made. It starts with Pacino and partner John Cazale storm a bank and hold it hostage. Things escalate as we are thrown into scene that is familiar in contemporary films but rare at the time.
