QUESTION: I hear that HelloHello's privacy policy is excellent, but how is it different?

ANSWER:

WHY should we worry about privacy laws? Yes, it is definitely one of those topics that we are starting to hear more and more about. Yet, HOW does it affect my family and me?

WITH the proliferation of the worldwide web, we are seeing more and more access to people's personal information. We recently (August, 2009) saw the Canadian Privacy Commissioner, contact a social networking company to advise them that their policies did not meet with Canadian Privacy Laws.

Some of the issues were and are:

* The ability for members/users to DELETE their personal accounts; vs. DISABLE their accounts. Note: disabling an account allows the social network to still hold your personal account information.
* Access of 3rd party developers to personal information of the user. This is best exampled when a member downloads an application in a social networking site.
* Rights and ownership of information contained on a member's site (i.e., pictures, videos, music, etc.)

WITH the onset of our current worldwide economic conditions, it is also increasing illegal activities online. Unfortunately, identify theft is real and everyone needs to protect their privacy and identity.

BUT what about legal operations? Should legal online businesses hold your personal information (i.e., phone number, birth date, address, etc.)? Even a better question. Should online businesses own your personal information (i.e., photos, videos, etc.)? Unfortunately, some of the biggest online sites on the web actually not only hold personal information but in their policies and procedures it becomes very questionable as to who owns the legal rights to the information/property. Ask yourself a question: Do you think if you cancel your membership with an online business that they delete your personal information? If you are in doubt, send a message to the company and have it clarified.
