Burma
Burma is a country located on the Bay of Bengal, surrounded by India, China and Thailand. The population is 54.3 million people. The main ethnic groups are Burman 68%, Shan 9%, Karen 7%, Rakhine 4%, Chinese 3%, Mon 2%, Indian 2%, other 5%. The main religions are Buddhist 89%, Christian 4% (Baptist 3%, Roman Catholic 1%), Muslim 4%, animist 1%, other 2%.
The current government is the Military Junta. There was a Constitution that was written on January 3, 1974 but has been suspended since 1988 when the Junta took power. There have been no elections since 1980 as the military leaders rule with a heavy hand.
Human rights violations have become a commonplace in Burma and the internal displacement of ethnic minorities is prevalent. There has been over a million Burmese, most of whom are ethnic minorities that have fled Burma for economic and political reasons to Bangladesh, India, China, Malaysia and Thailand for work and for political asylum. Today, over 150,000 refugees live in camps and another 30,000 live in refugee camps in Bangladesh.

Stand with the Burmese people
Hi, have you heard about the crisis in Burma?Burma is ruled by one of the worst military dictatorships in the world. Last month Buddhist monks and nuns began marching and chanting prayers to call for democracy. The protests spread and hundreds of thousands of Burmese people joined in -- but they've been brutally attacked by the military regime.
I just signed a petition calling on Burma's powerful ally China and the UN security council to step in and pressure Burma's rulers to stop the killing. The petition has exploded to over 500,000 signatures in a few days and is being advertised in newspapers around the world, delivered to the UN Security Council, and broadcast to the Burmese people by radio. We're trying to get to 1 million signatures this week, please sign below and tell everyone!
