Heifer International: The Pay It Foward Entrepreneurial Charity
Ranked #58 in Volunteering, #8,563 overall
Heifer International 'Teaches Them to Fish'
Heifer International is the perfect example of how this wise saying works. The give the fish to get someone started, but then teaches them to fish more efficiently.
Heifer is my ideal charity because it provides the means and training for third world people to become entrepreneurs while reminding them to take care of their neighbors. It a perfect of a blend of self reliance and being 'my brother's keeper'.
Heifer
1. Teaches people to fish (farm, raise honey bees, you name it).
2. Doesn't give them an omelet to eat for a day, but gives people the chickens to raise eggs to eat forever, PLUS helps them start an entrepreneurial project where they can also sell eggs to get the money to send the kids to school.
3. Has 'pay forward' programs where recipients give by helping their neighbors get started.
4. Has camps where well fed kids can live in mock ups of third world villages where they learn how to survive and gain respect for people they don't know.
5. So much more.
Disclaimer: The title is my description of what Heifer does. It is not the words that Heifer uses to describe itself. It does, however, give people the means to be entrepreneurs and expects them to pay forward.

Dan Zanes - Holiday Time In Brooklyn
When our friends at heifer (www.heifer.org) asked if I would do a holiday video, little did i know that a llama, a goat and a cow would visit my street in brooklyn. I invited a bunch of high energy neighbors to join me for a crazy afternoon video shoot of laughing, strumming guitars, playing flutes, trumpets, saxophones, banging on drums, and dancing madly, all for the sake of helping heifer international continue to raise money to combat world hunger.

Teenagers from Hong Kong Go to Tibet from Heifer International
They raised money to give Yaks to Tibetian Families and See Their Work Up Close and Personal
Kids from Hong Kong raise money to buy animals for Tibet. The families who got the animals use them to support themselves and give some of the offspring to their neighbors, combining the best of entrepreneurship and some social concern. Then it is rounded out when the kids from Hong Kong visit and learn more about the people they helped, first hand and see what their work has helped to create.
Heifer Project in Tibet
In March 2006 some Hong Kong International School students visited families who received animals to raise through Heifer International. Funds for these gifts were raised by HKIS Primary School students through a Read to Feed program.

Ideas for Gift Buying
Heifer gives you gift cards when you purchase animals. Here are some ways to use them.
1. Your vegetarian aunt will be pleased that her name is on the gift of lambs enabling a New Mexico family to make income on the wool.
2. Your neighbor, who makes great omelets will like it that you bought chickens for an African family, in his name.
3. Your crabby boss will be perplexed when you buy a goat in his name for a family in southeast Asia. But what can he do?

- Good question. I don't have an answer. I do know that Heifer has its catalogue on line, I would guess to save money. However, I haven't heard of your other charity. But its always good to keep checking and asking questions.
I hope you get this as you didn't give an email address. Blessings to you!

- How is Heifer International connected/contrasted with World Vision? Both charities seem to do the same thing! If somebody knows, please answer me -- am perplexed and want to gift the grandkids once again with a Heifer International animal to give, but I have not received a catalogue from Heifer and I have received one from World Vision.

My Bio

For Arrowsmith Printing 9/22/08
I was born into a small business, I believe that small business and entrepreneurs are the backbone of America and what has made us great. They are what made us great and will save us in these unsure times. I have never wanted to have a great job. Well, better a great one, than a boring dead end one, and I have had both. But I have never really wanted a job at all.
Don't get me wrong, I am a hard worker. I have worked a full-time job, a part time job and a private practice all at the same time for a lot of years in my past. It isn't the work, its the working for someone else. Never wanted to do that, and I don't understand those who want to do that.
When I was six months old my parents bought their first small town weekly newspaper in Iowa. This was back in the day, back when small town newspapers were not just advertising sheets. Perhaps there are still some of them that are real, I hope so.
So I came by this perverse nature naturally. My path to self employment has been different than theirs, but it has always been my path, my direction.
Growing up in Iowa, in the fifties, I also grew up politically conservative. By the time I was 30 I was radically left. Today? I am proudly liberal and what that means will be clearer as we progress.
However, I have had conflicts about 'taking advantage of people'. I now know that employing people is not automatically taking advantage of them, but it took a while for me to learn that nothing is intrinsically good or bad. Well, almost nothing.
I have educated myself in business, I have a small business and I have used EFT and other energy clearing methods to help me clarify the old conflicts and move forward.
My mission here is to provide a forum for people who want to work independently through one person businesses or through employing others and for whom the betterment of human kind is an important value. My lenses are about offering good products, teaching people about betting their lives, and using the money they make for their pleasure and the benefit of others.
That is how I see business and if you have a similar vision I invite you to my blog www.creatingbusinessenergy.com
