Help My Daughter to Go On a Summer Missions Trip
"When I grow up I want to work in an orphanage in Africa," she tells me.
Now Anna is close to being "grown up." She has turned into quite an awesome young lady. She is kind, helpful, sensitive, optimistic, sincere, and loves Jesus with all her heart.
Last summer (2008) she accomplished her dream. She went to Matamoros, Mexico to minister in drama, Vacation Bible School, and building a house.
It was a struggle to get there. Her destination cahnged three times! Fund raising was slowwwwww . . . We raised enough money for everything and had the trip paid for, but were short the amount needed to get her from Phoenix to Dallas so that she could join the rest of her team. A last minute donation blessed her (Thanks AN!) and she was able to go.
But the fight STILL wasn't over! As they trained in Dallas for the drama presentation they would perform Hurricane Dolly blew ashore in Matamoros and delayed their trip for a couple of days.
They FINALLY made it to Mexico and spent about a week sharing the gospel. She visited a jail and gave away a Bible to one of the men there. She befriended a little boy and she got about 50 mosquito bites.
But at the same time she was also bitten by the "Missions Bug." She came back ready to start raising funds for next years' trip!
We don't know yet where she will be going but we do know that she will need money to get there.
I'm going to step up work on this lens.
I am assuming if you are visiting this lens that you have been sent here by me or Anna in one of our efforts to get the word out about her fundraising efforts OR you are looking for ways to raise funds for your own missions trip. Either way I'm so glad your're here!
I want to bring you ideas for fundraisers. I what to share with you what has worked for us and what didn't go very well.
And I want YOUR input! Have a FANTASTIC fundraiser idea? How about a low budget/high profit idea? What was your funniest fundraiser? The most time consuming? We want (and NEED) your ideas!
This lens is dedicated to my daughter and her missions trip dreams. It is also dedicated to you--may you accomplish YOUR missions trip dreams, too!
And, of course, every penny I raise with this lens will go toward Anna's missions trip fund. If we raise "too much" for this summer's trip we will save it for her next trip. She plans to make a career of this (at least for a while) so she will need to do quite a bit of fundraising.
Thank you for your support. Anna gets really excited with every dollar we raise!
To find out more about how to make a donation visit Anna's Mission's Trip Website! [Update 11/29/08: This website needs A LOT of TLC! It will be getting a MAJOR overhall in the next month or so. But it still has relevant information on it.]

A Unique Twist on an Old Fundraising Idea
These letters can be successful, but here is a way to make them even more profitable:
Instead of preraring your letter on a word processor and then making a bunch of copies try mailing hand written letters instead.
Yes, this is A LOT of work, but think of the value that people place on a handwritten note compared to just another piece of mail.
Another advantage of this is, whereas, on a printed letter you may just put a greeting like "Dear Friends" with a personal note you can make the salutation "Aunt Mary" or "Mr. and Mrs. Bailey." This helps the recipient to think that what you have to say is directed especially to them.
If you write one letter each week day and two on Saturday you could generate more than 30 letters each month. Because of the labor involved in this project you may want to send some form letters and some personalized letters.
Try this idea and see if you get a response.

Another Fundraising Idea
"Every Time I . . . "
Find a friend or family member who is trying to break a bad habit (biting their nails, popping their knuckles, smoking, whatever.) Get them to agree that every time they catch themselves or someone else catches them doing the bad habit, they have to put a penny, or nickle, or dime, or even a quarter or a dollar in a jar.
At the end of the fundraiser you will have a nice amount of change and they, hopefully, will have broken a bad habit.
This could be a good fundraiser to get coworkers to participate in. The person who coordinates the fundraiser for you in their office could even offer prizes to the person who raises the most money and the least money (they are trying to break a habit afterall :-).
We haven't tried this yet, but if you do, drop us a note or leave us a comment and let us know how it went.

- I've been on many mission trips and the one thing that I learned is that sending out the triditional support letters via snail mail is no fun!
You should check out www.MissionMatchUp.com it allows anyone to go on there and make a support page (simular to a support letter) that can be easily emailed out to friends and family. There are also other cool features like blog posts and picture albums.

- yeah. I'm in the same boat as your daughter. I'm a fellow GE missionary, and have been dreaming of being a full time missionary in Africa for years. For one, have you guys checked out GE's list of 120 or something like that fundraising ideas? It's a BIG help. Letters work out really well. Many of my friends pay for trips to Africa every summer on letters alone. I've done auctions for a trip with my church and in one evening we raised $20,000. Try getting something big in your church donated. That was when I was living in Alabama and we got a signed University of Alabama football donated. All the Alabama fans wanted to have it and all the Aubrun fans wanted to win so that they could burn it. We ended up making $6,000 on that football alone. My PD also told me to write 3 letters. One to send before Christmas, one in early spring, and one about a month before the trip.

- We are missionaries to Mexico! And, my prayer is that Anna will not only reach her goals, but exceed them! We once heard an amazing Pastor say, that "If God gives the vision, he'll make the provision!" Be blessed in the name of Jesus!
