Who are "Help for Heroes"
This is my attempt to promote the work, and raise some money, for the "Help for Heroes" charity. This lens has no direct connection with the charity.
Help for Heroes is a British charity that offers direct, practical help to wounded soldiers. Its only been going since 2007 but has already raised close to £32,000,000!
Why are they needed?
Traditionally the support we give through our Government to those who have been wounded serving their country has been pathetic. Its sad that the support has to come through charity, but such is life.
"It's about the blokes, our men and women of the Armed Forces. It's about Derek, a rugby player who has lost both his legs, it's about Carl whose jaw is wired up so he has been drinking through a straw. It's about Richard who was handed a mobile phone as he lay on the stretcher so he could say goodbye to his wife. It's about Ben, it's about Steven and Andy and Mark, it's about them all. They are just blokes but they are our blokes; they are our heroes. We want to help our heroes."
What Can You Do?
From their site:-
"Help For Heroes called for the people of Great Britain to help us raise money for wounded soldiers and boy, have you stepped up to the challenge!!!
All over the country, people are baking cakes, shaving heads, parachuting, walking, hiking, cycling and much much more to raise money for our wounded boys and girls. Don't feel you have to lay on a massive event, every event is special to us and each and every contribution is valued the same way.
The Sun campaign at the end of March has raised huge awareness for the charity and we have had a staggering total of 6,000 events registered so far. Amazingly they are still coming in thick and fast, with an average of 300 events put on to raise money for Help for Heroes each week.
To all those that have done events, we would just like to say a HUGE thank you, and for those of you about to do your bit, good luck with whatever you have planned!"
Look at their site for some great ideas of what others have been up to raising money for Help for Heroes. They also have various gift items you can purchase, another way of supporting and promoting the charity.

Combat Stress
Recently Help for Heroes was able to donate £3,500,000 to Combat Stress. Their response was:-
"We continue to experience an increasing demand for our services from Veterans - up 53% since 2005. Last year alone we dealt with nearly 1,200 new cases. Sadly these Veterans had waited almost 14 years before approaching us for help. For most this means that, by the time they come to us, their condition is chronic and complex. Poor physical health, social exclusion, family breakdown, and a whole range of other issues just compound the problems they are facing."
Many Veterans leave the Armed Forces with disabling conditions like depression, panic attacks, anxiety and other serious mental illnesses. These can take several years to fully surface in some cases. It is usually the families who are left to support and bear the full brunt of the effects of these conditions. Combat Stress is currently helping around 4000 Veterans deal with these problems.
