External hemorrhoids, by contrast, are caused by the swelling of veins near the opening of the anus. Swollen veins inside the anus may protrude through the anal opening. These kinds of hemorrhoids are referred to as prolapsed hemorrhoids. The last type, a thrombosed external hemorrhoid, is the result of a thrombus, or clot, forming in the external hemorrhoid.
