Henna is a facinating way to color hair naturally. Learn about another alternative way to hair color your hair naturally for a new look this Summer!

What is Henna?

Henna or Hina (Lawsonia inermis) is a flowing plant that can be found growing in Africa, Southern Asia and Austrailia. Henna is a small tree that can be found with leaves that grow two to four centimeters long. It also grows in mid dry climates. It grows leaves and pedals during the warm months and the leaves turn yellow during the cool months.

produces a red-orange dye molecule, lawsone. This molecule has an affinity for bonding with protein, and thus has been used to dye skin, hair, fingernails, leather, silk and wool.

Henna is commercially cultivated in western India, Pakistan, Morocco, Yemen, Iran, Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan and Libya.

How to make Henna for your Hair

I personally feel that when you are making and adding the ingredients to make the mixture, that it is essential to use lemon. Many people will tell you to use coffee, tea, wine, or yogurt (I have even found someone that uses red kool-aid to add to the mixture!!) but I feel that the best results for what you want is to stick to the basics. Please look at this video on how to mix the ingredients together.

Best Way to Apply your Dye!!!

Soft 'N Style Applicator Bottle with Angle Tip
8.5 oz.

There is more than one way to apply the henna
to your hair, but I have just found this applicator to be one of the best ways to keep your henna (especially when you are reapplying it to your roots) exactly where you want it....on your hair. This no spill applicator keeps the paste in a tube so that you have the ability to place it uniformly in your roots. This applicator is one of the essential products that you can use to apply and reapply the henna to your hair and roots.

Coloring Virgin Hair vs Color Treated Hair with Henna

Close-up of Shiny Red Hair

Henna may be an alternative to using artificial dyes, but you need to be careful with colored treated hair. The hair color that you currently have in the hair my not look the same based upon the chemicals/dyes that were already added to the hair prior. I recommend to consult a hair stylist before taking on the task of dying color treated hair. On the other hand, for virgin (not dyed or chemically treated hair) this may be an alternative to chemical dyes and other artificial coloring.

Need to Mix Your Concoction

Trudeau Melamine Mixing Bowls, Set of 3

It is important to have a mixing bowl to add your henna
and other ingredients. Make sure that the bowl that you use used for henna
ONLY. Make sure that it is durable and a bowl that you can reuse. I choose these bowls because they are the right side and come in all kinds of colors for you to choose from.

How to Apply Henna to Your Hair

This was the best video that I could find that could help me with applying henna
to African American hair. It like this video because it shows how much you REALLY need to add on to the hair for the results that you want. Don't be shy with the amount of henna
that you add to the hair. Please look at this video to see the before and after.

Make Sure to Add Lemon!

ReaLemon 100% Lemon Juice
2/48 oz. btls.

There are many ingredients that you can use to add to your henna, but I recommend lemon juice. It gives the hair a richer fuller color. You have the option to use other kinds of acidic ingredients if you don't have lemons or lemon juice. If you want to use an alternative to lemons or lemon juice because you don't have it or it causes an allergic reaction, you can also use orange juice, grapefruit juice, herbal teas, wine or vinegar.

Keep it Clean with Gloves

Latex gloves, Medical grade powder free, 100 box med

Henna not only can change the color of your hair but anything that it comes in contact with. Many individuals apply henna
with their fingers only. If you are not comfortable with tinting your hands and fingers, I recommend latex cloves (or non latex if you are allergic to latex) they are cheap and have many that come in one bag. If you are going to henna your hair on a regular basis, I would recommend for your to buy a bag of gloves to keep with your other materials and should one of the essential products you should keep on hand.
