Recovery after Hernia Surgery Can be Faster than You Think

A hernia is the painful protrusion of a tissue, part of an organ or other structure through the muscle or membrane of which it is normally contained.

Ouch! Your hernia may be one of the more painful medical conditions you have ever had. Or, it could just be an unsightly - but relatively painless- nuisance. Hernias can bulge, and they can cause nausea and vomiting, as well.

If you have had a hernia and now face hernia surgery, you are going to want to recover as quickly as possible. This lens was designed to give you hernia surgery recovery insights, including: what to expect after your hernia surgery and how to recover as quickly as possible.

What is a Hernia?

(know your enemy)

As mentioned above, a hernia is a protrusion of a tissue, structure or organ through a muscle wall or other membrane that is normally not supposed to protrude at all. Not a very fun subject, is it? But, if you or someone you know and love has a hernia, you'll want to acquaint yourself a bit more with what you are up against.

Most hernias occur in the abdomen or groin, when a weakness in the muscle wall evolves into a hole or "defect."

The presence of a hernia may be accompanied by pain, a lump or organ dysfunction due to part of the organ getting pinched or caught in the hernia.

Some Facts about Hernias

Here are some facts about hernias you should know. Hernias:
  1. can run in families
  2. often result from the weakening of "containing membranes" or muscles
  3. can be external (herniating outside of the body) or internal (protruding inside)
  4. can compromise blood supply in some cases, a condition known as strangulation
  5. can cause gangrene or death if not treated
  6. can usually be repaired surgically
  7. treated by surgery involves a recovery process that rarely requires long-term changes in lifestyle

Hernia Surgery Recovery Facts

The recovery process after hernia surgery varies from person to person, of course. Here are some points about the hernia surgery recovery process that you should know:

1. Many patients are managed through day surgery centers and are able to return to work within 1-2 weeks
2. However, heavy lifting is usually prohibited for a long time afterward
3. Patients who have had their hernias repaired with artificial mesh often recover in a matter of days.
4. About 10% of hernia surgeries involve some sort of complication. However, these can usually be addressed effectively during the recovery process.

Hernia surgery has come a long ways. Working as a Surgical Tech, I see that mesh is being used in nearly every hernia with great results.
