Hidalgo: The Movie

Hidalgo: The Horse, The Life, The Movie.

I created this lens to share my love for this movie. As a horse painter it can't be too surprising that a horse movie would fall into my all time favorites, but it kinda is. In truth, I find most critter movies go overboard on the smaltzy side of things. Hidalgo has some of that but is in general a good story.

I am a movie buff and my husband and I go to many. Even bad movies I enjoy on some level. But there are only a handful that I can watch over and over again. I have seen Hidalgo many times, mostly in bits and pieces while I'm surfing the channels but I do own the DVD. Despite having seen it many times there are still certain sequences that give me goosebumps.

I think the movie does a good job expressing the connection that individuals and even whole races of people experience with their horses. So come with me as I walk you through the movie.

Release Date: March 2004

A Brief Plot Summary

Frank T. Hopkins is the son of a cavalry scout and an Indian princess. Set in 1890, he and Hidalgo compete in many endurance rides as well as work as a dispatch rider for the US Cavalry. Frank does not look of his native ancestry and so blends in with the white mans world. When delivers the message that brought about the massacre at Wounded Knee he begins to struggle with his identity.

Frank and Hidalgo eventually winds up working with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Being a man of two worlds he struggles with the guilt and shame over Wounded Knee and also as to how the Indians are treated at the Wild West Show. He falls to drinking to cope. When Hopkins is billed in the show as "the world's greatest endurance rider." a great sheik challenges him with an invitation to participate in the race of 3,000 miles across the desert known as the "Ocean Of Fire." If he refuses he needs to withdraw his claim.

So of course he goes and the movie is essentially about the trials of the grueling race which I won't cover because I want to leave some mystery yet to be discovered in the watching of the movie. In the end he finds himself and proves his worth as well as Hidalgo's. There is also a nice coming full circle when he uses his prize monies to secure the purchase of native ponies which were destined to be destroyed as part of the governments plan to control the native people's population.

The movie has quite a bit of political overtones. And the scene at Wounded Knee is particularly disturbing. As it should be. Compared the actuality of what the graphic slaughter actually was, this sequence is quite mild. Once again this movie is rated PG-13

What Makes Hidalgo A Great Family Movie

What makes this a great family movie is it covers the complex issue of figuring out who we are and our place in the world. It teaches a morality and pride in one's people and culture. Also it has some great action scenes without falling into the bloody violence so common in today's movies. And lastly it has gorgeous horses and the stunning scenes which completely enchanted the artist in me.

The Movie is rated PG-13 for some adventure violence and mild sexual innuendo and runs 1 hour 36 minutes..

Based On A True Story?

The movie claims to be based on a true story. I tend to look at those claims with a critical eye, as most are extremely loosely based. For instance Dreamer (another horse movie) is "inspired" by a true story. But the only part that is true, is that a racing mare had the same kind of fracture and went on to race again. That's it. Everything else was fabricated.

According to Frank T. Hopkins he really did take his mustang named Hidalgo to race in Arabia in 1890 and won. However, all of the adventures during the race in the movie were fabricated to make it a more interesting story. Prior to the movie's release, there were plenty who said that no such race ever existed or that there ever was a horse owned by Hopkins called Hidalgo. Basically Frank made the whole thing up.

Frankly this means little to mean in term of whether it be a good movie to watch. It would certainly add to the story if it really happened but in the end, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. 1 hour and 36 minutes worth of quality equestrian distraction.

Compilation Video Of The Desert Crossing

Set To Musical Score

This is a good compilation of the struggles Hopkins and Hidalgo face crossing the desert.

It ends in a sequence where Hidalgo collapses from exhaustion and he is about to shoot him. Frank pulls out his gun and puts it to his horse's temple. As he builds his courage to shoot Hidalgo, he begins to talk about a race they had run in Missouri where they were 3 days in the lead and there was nothing but a sea of green. He says (paraphrasing here)

" . . . If there is a heaven on earth that was surely it. And if there's a heaven on earth, well then there must be a hell. We just couldn't cross it, partner."

The fact that I know in reality that never happened, not even accoding to Frank's telling of the story. In Hopkin's version Hidalgo won that race by 33 hours. Knowing this doesn't diminish the emotional response I have, every time I see it. Maybe that's what good story telling is all about.

Wikipedia on Frank T Hopkins

Photo of Frank Hopkins

According To Wikipedia

Frank Hopkins (1865 - 1951) was a cowboy from the United States. He was known by his stories about his own exploits and was also recognized by his contemporaries as both an accomplished distance rider and an activist for the preservation of the Mustang.[citation needed]

Hopkins made a number of disputed claims, including claims of being a famous endurance horse racer who won over 400 races, and his involvement in a legendary 3,000-mile horse race that passed the Gulf of Syria and the inland borders of two other countries, which was supposed to have taken place in Arabia in 1890. This story was adapted into the 2004 film Hidalgo starring Viggo Mortensen. However, some[1] argue that most of Hopkins' claims as depicted in the film, including the existence of any such race in the first place, are 'tall tales' or hoaxes.

In 2006, John Fusco, the screenwriter of Hidalgo, responded to the disputed items. He admitted that he took parts of Hopkins' 1891 desert memories and "heightened the 'Based On' story to create an entertaining theatrical film" but asserts that the story of the man and his horse are true. Fusco offers quotes from those who knew Hopkins along with information found in old texts to verify his story.

According to the film, the descendants of the horse Hidalgo, for which the movie was named, live among the Gilbert Jones herd of Spanish Mustangs on Blackjack Mountain in Oklahoma.

Frank Hopkins is interred in Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens County, New York City.

According to the Longriders Guild, the Yemen Government, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabian Government there has never been an "Ocean of Fire" race. According to Dr. Aw Al-Bawdi, director of research at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, "There is Absolutely no record or reference to Hopkins, with or without his mustangs, ever setting foot on Arabian soil."

Frank's age is also questionable. When he married in Los Angeles in 1929, he wrote on the marriage license that he was only 44 years old. That would place his birth at about 1885.

Hopkins also claimed to have been employed by "Buffalo Bill's" Wild West Show. But the curator of the Buffalo Bill Museum states his name is nowhere to be found in the archives. However, he is listed as being employed by the Ringling Brothers Circus in 1917, as a horse performer.

Hidalgo Model Horse By Breyer

I had to include this Breyer model. I have collected model horses since I was a small child. And though now I only add a new model every few years or so I still keep tabs on whats out.

This is a lovely model and is a unique mold which makes it especially lovely.
