Savannah: Off the beaten path!

Adventures in odd, weird, gastric, quirky, eccentric, tasteful and eclectic. Discovering Savannah's hidden treasures that make Savannah what it is. If it is on the beaten path, it probably won't be in here. The only reason I am revealing these secrets to the great unwashed, is simply because I want them to stay in business. If I alone could support them and keep them crowd free, I would.

Food is a great place to start. I found this great quote in one of the featured establishments. It sums things up quite nicely.

"...If you like dishes made out of a piece of lettuce and groundup peanuts and a maraschino cherry and marshmallow whip and a banana

You will not get them in Savannah,
But if you seek something headier than nectar and tastier than ambrosia and more palatable than manna,

Set your teeth, I beg you, in one of these specialites de Savannah.
Everybody has the right to think whose food is the most gorgeous,
And I nominate Georgia's."

Ogden Nash introduction to "The Savannah Cook Book" by Harriet Ross Colquitt pub. 1933

"Smack Your Momma" Cuisine

Savannah gastric treats

This is a place that you don't want to bring your mother to. Only because you will be arrested for abuse, because this is "smack your momma" cuisine. This is life changing cuisine. You're going to walk away asking yourself "why have I eaten anywhere else?" "Why didn't my mother feed me this?" "Did my mother not love me?"

My first reveal is Wiley's BBQ. Mr. Wiley is no secret to the BBQ world. He has won so many awards for his food it is down right embarrassing. This little gem is located in a strip center, so don't miss it. So many treats so little time. I recommend Roman style eating here...that is gorge and purge. I know that is pretty gross, but take a few a bites and you will understand. This is serious throwdown, so don't even play. Brisket, Mac & Cheese, pulled pork, homemade sauces, banana pudding**** (my personal favorite, made me miss my grandmaw), bourbon breadpudding, sweet tea and sooooo much more. They are also opened for dinner 4 nights a week closing from 3-5 between lunch and dinner.

No it's not southern, it's South African.

This is a "run don't walk" gastric treat. Johnny has been serving hot and tasty treats for some time. Many of the SCAD students already know about this one. It has been my experience that if the students are going there, you should too. Lasagna, sausage, meatpie etc. tempt even the vegans. Wonderful vegies can be found here as well. Try the tea...southern sweetness meets South African Rooibos. It's a beautiful thing!

Savannah, the tourist's version

Get this part out of the way so you can move into the unknown and wonderful.

Savannah is the largest city in, and the county seat of, Chatham County, Georgia, USA. Savannah was established in 1733 and was the first colonial and state capital of Georgia. Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors, who enjoy the city's architecture and historic buildings: the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America), the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences (one of the South's first public museums), the First African Baptist Church (one of the oldest African American Baptist congregations in the United States), Temple Mickve Israel (the third-oldest synagogue in America), and the Category: Central of Georgia Railroad - : Savannah Shops and Terminal Facilities|Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex (the oldest standing antebellum rail facility in America). Today Savannah's downtown area, which includes the Savannah Historic District, the Savannah Victorian Historic District and 21 parklike squares, is one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States (designated by the U.S. government in 1966). Savannah was the host city for the sailing competitions during the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Who might you see?

Wonderful people you might see in Savannah. If you do see them, just leave them alone. It is a good southern courtesy.
