Spelling Can Make all the Difference!
Funny Phrases from Kindergarten and Beyond..
In my years of working with kids, my own and those in my classes, it's been fun to watch the way they play with language and come up with hybrid words and phrases that don't actually exist in English as we know it!
Whatebber: This favorite of mine was coined by a well-remembered, English learner student I will call "D" who was upset with me one day and would not respond to my directions in the classroom. Frustrated by her refusal to comply, I casually shrugged my shoulders and mumbled to myself, "whatever." From across the room, a five year old finger wagged at me and I could see this 5 year old girl as her 35 year old mom scolding me , in complete seriousness, "Don't say whatebber! It's a bad bad word!" Clearly this little girl had a teenage sister.
Reptangle: No it's not a purple dinosaur shaped geometric figure! It's when little minds try so hard to remember the names of shapes you just can't be sure what you will hear as you assess their knowledge.
A little shack please: My nephew had the most adorable way of saying he wanted something to eat when he was around 4. For some reason, he referred to his little meal not as a snack, but as "I would like a little shack, please". It was all I could do to not giggle, and I was promptly reminded to not joke around about this cute phrase by his wonderful loving mother, my sister.
Miss dissal: When I started teaching, I had an awesome teaching partner with whom I shared a classroom. She taught afternoon Kindergarten and I would help her in the afternoon, working in small groups. One day, a puzzled little girl stopped working and looked at me quizically as I told her we would be cleaning up soon to go home. She questioned, "But what about Miss Dissal? When is she coming?" She was referring to her teacher's daily agenda which said "dismissal" at 2:00. Poor little thing was waiting for an exciting guest to arrive but all she got to do was go home!
And the newest to join the list: Mrs. Young Lady A student I had last year laughs as she calls me my former name, Ms. Mancini and then catches herself and says " oh hi, Mrs. Young.. Mrs. Young Lady.. I suppose it's a good thing my new married name isn't Old!
Today I was an observer ( a rare occasion where I get to learn from another teacher!) in a first grade classroom. With 12 teachers sitting in the back of the room watching all the kids learn new strategies, a couple kids got a bit flustered. You could hear the quiet collective teachers chuckle when a student said, in all seriousness, " Hey wait.. what is a female girl again?"
Kids are so literal! I was doing a math assessment with a student where she had to make a pattern with some pattern blocks after looking at the pattern on the paper. As she began to get frustrated because she couldn't remember the pattern, I said to her, "You can say it aloud, like this ABABAB. It might help you. So, the next thing I knew she was nearly yelling, SQUARE,CIRCLE, TRIANGLE.... I looked at her puzzled, and she said, "You said to say it loud!"

Kid says," I know.. poorigami! is when you are bad at origami!"
Citizenship.. as Understood by a Kindergartner
My Dad Steals!
We had been studying what it takes to be a good citizen. A hand shot up in the class and a husky little voice declared, "My Dad! He's not a good citizen!" I hesitated, afraid of what was coming next.. "Why is that?" "Because he stoled all of me and my brothers candy on Halloween!"
Isn't "Grandhug Day When you hug Your Grandparents?"
Psychic or Psychopathic?
A Syllable or 2 Makes all the Difference

I was working with one of my 5th grade tutoring students and was telling him about a past "deja vu" experience. He remarked, "Oh that means you're "psychopathic!' As he saw the grin spread across my face, he paused and said,"Wait, what's the right word?" I told him I thought he meant "psychic" and asked if he really meant to call me a crazy serial killer who belonged in the psychiatric ward! He laughed hysterically as he realized the mistake.
This picture seems particularly appropriate as it was taken outside the Freud Museum in London!
“A student was a bit confused but so cute: "Look at the "magenta!" It tells what we will do today”
"I'll Just Put on my Thinking Tiara!"
She was listening!
During a recent lesson in my Kindergarten class, I was transitioning to a lesson and I instructed my students to focus and "put on your thinking caps." As many of my students got quiet, closed their eyes and appeared to be ready, a squeaky voice rang out, "I'll just put on my thinking tiara, ok?" "Of course," I replied, quietly chuckling to myself. Where is that book about the "jinglebread" man?

Yes, we all know who the gingerbread man is, but little Freddie( name changed to protect the adorable little guy) was looking frantically for this book one day, asking his peers, "Hey, have you seen that book about the Jinglebread man? Although one of the kids noticed the mistake and giggled, the name caught on and is a well used word in my Kindergarten classroom.

This is "weally twicky!" My head and my heart gotta work together!
Sometimes You Have to Model the Silliness!
Lighten the Mood at School
Using humor helps kids feel at ease. Look at me being a total clown! ( well actually a cat) for Halloween.
So Cock Isn't Really a Bad Word?
Old English Nursery Rhyme Confuses Our 2nd grade Reading Buddy
Every Friday, my kindergarten class gets to read with our 2nd grade reading buddy class. Everything was merrily going smoothly today until one of the 2nd grade boys looked up at me quizzically as he read a nursery rhyme about a "cock-horse" to his little buddy. "So cock ISN'T a bad word?" he asked. Quick on my feet I replied that it's not often used these days ( in a nursery rhyme sort of way) so the slang meaning was probably the one most used and he is best not to use that word! I somehow managed to keep a straight face throughout the encounter!
Rodney Dangerfield Had Some Funny One-liners!
"I was such an ugly kid - When I played in the sandbox, the cat kept covering me up"
Rodney Dangerfield quotes (American Comedian, 1921-2004)

On Chinese New Year, "Are we Making Jack-o-Lanterns?"

Hey! Where's my pot of gold?
Some Kids Just Don't Hold Back!
I was counseling an 8 yr old who needed to learn social skills. We would go into the community to "practice." One day, shopping at Costco, we ran into my boyfriend, who was 15 years older. The 8 yr. old gave the guy the once over, looked at me and said, "Tell me you're with him for the money!

Is Honesty Best?
While chatting with a Kindergartner he said, "When my mom gets out of the shower, her hair looks like a bird nest." Trying not to giggle too much, I replied, "Do you tell her that?" A serious look came across his face," Nooo... I don't tell her that." "Good!"
Funny When 'Lil Ones Sound Like Their Older Siblings
My kindergarten class was enjoying the outdoors on a beautiful spring day, getting ready to plant our beans. All of a sudden a little curly haired cutie exclaimed, " O-M-G, there are little rocks in this dirt!" Something about her spelling out the o-m-g was just so funny.

Injuns Make you Cry Right?
Pronunciation can be Critical!

I had been talking with one of my Kindergarten students about ways to take control of her distressing emotions by thinking about something else or visualizing a pleasant scene. Yesterday, she announced to me, Mrs. Young. you know.. you can cry even if you're happy. I said, "Yes, I know" and then she said.. yeah.. and injuns make you cry too. I asked her to repeat herself a couple times and then, seeing the perplexed look on my face, she said, "Well, I don't know how to say it .. but you know.. my mom cries when she cuts them. .you know... and I said.. oh. .onions! and she said.. yeah that's it!
Gotta Watch Out for those Dangerous "Medicals"!
It was time for our exciting in-class assembly. A fun Mad Science demonstration would teach us about polymers and we would make slime. As the presenter asked the students questions, one of my students chimed in: "Yeah, we have to be careful with the "medicals" because they might be dangerous. Those medicals were indeed "chemicals" that were not dangerous! Thoreau?
I was working today at my tutoring job and heard a tutor ask a student: Who is Thoreau? I nearly fell off my chair when the kid answered: He's a quarterback right? The tutor said.. umm.. no.. why? The student quickly retorted: You said "throw" right?

What keeps us on the ground?
During a recent science presentation, our guest speaker asked the kindergartners the question, "What force keeps us on the ground? She was a bit surprised at their answer " Our feet!"
You mean we can't live here?

Watch Out for Vampires!
Did ya see that look in his eye?

One day after school, this little cutie in my class was walking with me to his afterschool class. Puzzled by his friend's facial expressions, he said to me in a whisper, "Hey, Mrs. Young.. did you see that look in his eyes? He had a really weird look in his eyes!" It was so adult-like it threw me for a loop and it was all I could do to not start laughing!
More fun Kid Stories
I was giving a student a writing assessment, as he had been absent the day before when the rest of the class took it. One of my students, who always seems to be 5 going on 40, strolled by the table, took a look at the picture that the other boy had drawn and said, " Now that.. that's a good-lookin fish!" It was priceless.
I was telling my students to clean up after their post lunch "quiet time" where they can read, write or rest, and I noticed that one little guy had a piece of paper still out and in his hand. I reminded him to put it away so he closed his paper "flip phone" and slipped it right into his pocket.
I asked my students to find one thing that "fascinates" them. One of the girls wanted to learn more about stars so I found a picture of some stars and then one of the Dog Star. When I told her the name, she pretended to bark until suddenly a serious expression came over her. She quietly asked, "You mean, like down face dog star?" Her mom is obviously into Yoga!
Duel
I think that kids are an amazing combination of their genetics and the environments which facilitate the expression of their genes. Personality is a complex subject, particularly in kids who are so rapidly changing and developing. I, for example, was very shy growing up in a household with 4 other siblings. Those who know me now, working in an environment where my passions and values are utilized to help others, would never believe I was a shy kid.
Are kids' personalities more determined by genetics or environment and social influences?

Kids are the product of their environment
Kids personalities are a reflection of genetics
Make-Her-Laugh says:
Genetics in the first place, then the environment shapes their personalities probably differently than what they have the potential for.

You can tell that these little kids are going to have a lot to say make someone laugh. Kids are social, and they learn by interacting and observing others. Why not record your favorite little cutie saying one of his or her made up phrases or words? Kids love to look back at pictures and movies of themselves and want to hear all about the time they did something superbly silly.
