Help is on the way!

Yep many of us are on a budget these days and yep kids need money too! Catch my drift...see where I am going with this one?

What I mean is actually hiring a kid from your neighborhood or local high school to do odd jobs around the yard or in the house. We just did this the other day and it turned into a real win--->win. The kids earned a little money and we got to tick off a few things on our to-do list.

Sure, I think it is a great idea!

BigGirlBlue says:

Yes, and I did when we went away. I had the neighbour's daughter water and weed my gardens so they wouldn't be unruly when I returned. Definitely cheaper than a gardener and she appreciated the extra cash in her pocket for what was a relatively easy job.

jeffwend says:

I absolutely would hire a kid. Many neighbors hired me when I was young for yard work or shoveling the snow in the drive. Just make sure it is not a job that is too big for a youngster to handle.

HomeTowne_Market says:

I would and have. Its a wonderful way to get you driveway shoveled. The neighbor kids used to charge a pizza with everything and some hot cocoa. It was well worth it!

Nope, I'll just do it myself!

For that special someone

Here are some ideas for hiring a kid for someone else or a special occasion.

  • Surprise your mom on Mother's Day by having a group of teens work on all those odd jobs.

  • Plan a date night with your honey, have a teen all lined up to babysit for the night!

  • Have a kid or two come over on Saturday morning to help your significant other with chores...cuts the time in half, enjoy your evening together!

  • Hire a kid for the winter to shovel snow for an elderly neighbor or your older parent.

  • Mention hiring a teen for pet care (walking and/or grooming) to an elderly neighbor, your friends heading out on vacation, and people who work long hours.

  • Remember your neighborhood kids the next time you have a holiday party or birthday celebration, they can help with serving, games, clean-up, etc.

Sample ads

Our son loved having money in his pocket. When he got his first car he decided to place an ad that he would do odd jobs. The first day the ad was in the paper he got three phone calls to do work for people living right in our town. The first job more then paid for the ad and he continued to get work just by word of mouth. The first ad was the basics of what we placed in our hometown paper, the other ads are examples that your kid might be able to use!

Great idea! Sort of like "Outsourcing" the domestic jobs! Teens love to earn money!

My sister's yard is very, very steep. When she bought the house a teenager in the neighborhood kept the yard mowed. I believe later he moved away and she's not been able to get anyone else (pros) to agree to mow it.

I really like your idea of hiring a kid to shovel an elderly neighbors driveway. It both helps the kid and the senior, but it also will hopefully create a friendship between the two generations.
