History of a Course in Miracles

The writing of a Course in Miracles was first started by Dr. Helen Schucman in the early 70's when she gained the knowledge through dreams. She documented those vivid deams which became the foundation for A Course in Miracles and she strongly believed that this information was coming from Jesus himself.

One unique aspect of this experience for Helen was that the voice could be stopped and started at any time. In this way, her experience was not like other people who had to go into a trance and write automatically.

Helen was not alone in her endeavor, however. Her department head and a tenured Professor of Medical Psychogy where they both worked, Dr. William Thetford helped transcribes Helen's spoken words onto paper.

A Course in Miracles was first published in 1975, which is the same year Dr. Schucman assigned copyright of the Course to the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP). However, due to a court ruling in 2004, all versions of ACIM published before 1975 are considered to be public domain, and therefore, reprintable in any form.
