History of a Course in Miracles
One unique aspect of this experience for Helen was that the voice could be stopped and started at any time. In this way, her experience was not like other people who had to go into a trance and write automatically.
Helen was not alone in her endeavor, however. Her department head and a tenured Professor of Medical Psychogy where they both worked, Dr. William Thetford helped transcribes Helen's spoken words onto paper.
A Course in Miracles was first published in 1975, which is the same year Dr. Schucman assigned copyright of the Course to the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP). However, due to a court ruling in 2004, all versions of ACIM published before 1975 are considered to be public domain, and therefore, reprintable in any form.

I am just starting on the journey but a course in miracles is starting to make sense. I am excited about the future lessons.
A Course in Miracles (also referred to as ACIM or the Course) is a self-study curriculum (spiritual in nature) that sets forth a pure non-dualistic metaphysics yet integrates (its definition of the principle of) forgiveness emphasizing its practical application in daily living.
There is no author listed on either the cover or the title page of the copyrighted publication, nor is there a "personal name" listed for author/creator with the United States Library of Congress. However, in the Preface of the Course, under the section entitled "How It Came," there is a first-person account by Helen Schucman who describes in her own words the process by which the material came to fruition. Schucman claimed to have written the material, with the help of William Thetford, based on the dictation of an inner Voice. In the last paragraph of this section, Schucman explains why the names of the collaborators do not appear on the cover.
The most recent copyrighted, published edition of A Course in Miracles is the only edition that contains in one place all of the writings that Schucman authorized to be printed. It is published solely by the Foundation for Inner Peace, the organization chosen by Schucman for this purpose. It consists of preface, text, workbook for students, manual for teachers, including clarification of terms, and two supplements: 1) Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process and Practice; and 2) The Song of Prayer (see image and infobox to right).
Judith Skutch Whitson, President and Chairperson of the Foundation for Inner Peace, reports that nearly two million volumes of A Course in Miracles have been published and disseminated worldwide since it first became available for sale in 1976. Additionally, A Course in Miracles has been translated into nineteen different languages with eight new translations underway.

I have struggled with the hard core metaphysical stuff as taught by ACIM and further clarified by Ken W. I love the spiritual practices of forgiveness and creating peace but I can't wrap my brain around the illusory stuff..can someone help me with that. I love this planet..am I not supposed to because it is not one of God's creations? Do I stop my anti-litter campaign? How about the peace movement that I am involved with? How does it fit in to the metaphysical teaching of."there is no world" Can someone help me?

in reply to Tammylove My favorite aspect of ACIM is what you described at the end... that no matter what path we choose (whether it's ACIM or another), we will all get "there"... we will connect with source (no matter what we call it). And, if given a choice between a path that makes me feel good and a path which feels disempowering or controlling, I'll go with the one that feels good.

It is because every king, ruler, and religion has altered the "current" version of the Bible to say what they wanted people to believe in order to use guilt and fear to control them. As you said... "Let us love as Jesus loves and it's as simple as that." is exactly what ACIM is about! Have you read it? ACIM is the most "on track" book you will ever find! It teaches how to become "like" Jesus and see the "God" in everyone and LOVE EVERYONE! And how not to become upset with those who do not believe what we believe and how to be more understanding of those who are not ready yet to accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit, God, or what ever name you give the source of creation ... realizing that EVERYONE WILL "GET THERE" in their own time. ACIM removes the fear of HELL and allows love to flow more freely! I believe everyone should own a copy!

My sense is this book comes from a higher source, and there is great potential for life change through it. According to David Hawkins, this book has a very high calibration. Personally I haven't stayed on track with it for long enough - but I am very interested, and hope I can stay with it this time.
