Heroes of Might and Magic

Ranked #6,353 in Computers & Electronics, #132,458 overall

The best Multiplayer game that could be played on one computer - ever!

Heroes of Might and Magic began wayyy back in 1995 (Practically before Al Gore invented the internet!).  It was the very first turn-based strategy RPG game of it's kind and since then it has spawned 4 sequels and a genre of it's own.

My History with Heroes

How I came to love the game that build a genre

About 10 years ago, when a 14.4k modem only came on the $3,000 computers... I was a budding computer game junkie. However, my friends and I constantly ran into the same problem, we were unable to play on multiple computers when we wanted to play games with or against each other. Lugging a computer over to the other guy's house just was not feasible every day. In the end, we found Heroes.
I am proud to say that I own every single version of Heroes that has been released. (Except the chronicles set... I never did understand those...)

Why is heroes unique?

It was the first computer game to truly allow multi player action in a turn based setting through a 'hot-seat' feature where multiple users could play at one computer! This revolutionized my after school activities!

Since it's initial release, it has spawned an entire genre of games based on the same concept. Fantasy Games heavily built on strategy that include a turn-based system have built up a small, if extremely devoted, following over the years.

The most attractive feature the Heroes series has over many other current games is you can literally stand up and walk away from your computer at any second and when you return, nothing will have happened to your game. Turn-based strategy allows for that, something I can truly appreciate.

Heroes of Might and Magic III Reviews, Cheats, and walkthroughs

Heroes III Was all the best parts of the first two titles with just the right amount of seasoning.

Heroes III was, in my opinion, the best title by far in the Heroes series. Heroes IV and V have their merits, (V could one day rival Heroes III), But the extended playability of Heroes III brought on by the modding community around it was amazing. Here are just a few samples of that community.

Heroes III : The hits keep on coming....

This round of the Heroes line had two expansions. A popular collection called Heroes III : Complete was released with some bonus material on it. That would be the version I recommend getting.

Heroes IV : Moving in a New Direction

Heroes IV tried to remain true to the Series, but sticks out among all of them

Many think that Heroes IV was the worst title in the Heroes Franchise.

Many others believe it was the best.

It was certainly a step away from the usual Heroes History. Introduced was the ability to have single creatures roam free, freeing up your Heroes for more important (and safer!) work than exploring and scouting unknown terrain.

Heroes also became a type of creature class in themselves. They did not need supporting armies to travel around and could fight and cast spells and die like any other creature. I remember beating the 'Druid' Campaign with no army for essentially the entire multi map campaign. Because of various summoning spells and my Heroes sheer power, waiting for creatures to grow was simply unnecessary.

This was a major departure from Heroes past, where asset and resource allocation in the early game usually told the winner. While still very important, they dynamic was changed by allowing Heroes to fight. This seems to be a love/hate feature, and was moderated heavily in the most recent title of the series.

Heroes IV Essentials

Heroes IV can still be commonly found

You can sometimes find Heroes IV in big box retailers as well as discount software stores. However, if you see a copy, Grab it! It took me several months after the expansions came out before I was able to find them in store. They always seemed to fly off the shelves

Heroes V: Getting back to basics while moving forward

In the Most Recent Installment New is mixed with Old

From Wikipedia:

Features

  • The game is rendered fully in 3D, unlike previous installments.

  • A new skill/spell/creature system is used.

  • There are six town types: Haven, Inferno, Necropolis, Academy, Dungeon and Sylvan.

  • Players can see their opponents' tracks on the ground. They get deeper and last longer with the size of the army. Each faction has its own distinctive 'trail'.

  • Multiplayer has a "fast mode" option, where it is possible to set a time limit on the turns so the pace will be faster.

  • There are three skill levels: Normal, Hard and Heroic. An Easy setting was added with patch 1.1 after concerns that the Normal mode was too hard for casual gamers.

  • The set of resources are the same as previous Heroes games, the fog of war acts like HoMM III, as does the retaliation. However, some creatures have the ability of ranged retaliation.

  • There are four magic schools: Light, Dark, Destructive and Summoning Magic. (As well as four 'Adventure Map' spells)

  • Creatures are upgradeable from a 'Rank I' to a 'Rank II' state.

  • Creature generation in town structures is on a weekly basis, like in .

  • The game's music is composed by Rob King and Paul Romero.

  • The battlefield is divided into squares instead of hexagons, like in the fourth game and unlike all the previous ones.

I really like Heroes of Might and Magic III, but I play the forth one over and over, but a map I made myself in editor. That's the only map I play in HoMM IV, because it's crazy awesome. I haven't played it in awhile though, my new addiction is Squidoo!
