Checklist of things to do

- Identify a niche market
- Find products to sell in that niche
- Choose a your marketing strategy
- Attract customers

There's quite a lot in that list, so lets take them one at a time. Here is a brief introduction to each activity.

Identify a niche market
A niche is a small section of a market containing people who are interested in a fairly narrow field. For example, there is a large market selling to people who are interested in 'dogs', but because it's large, there is too much competition for most small businesses. There is a smaller market for, say, individual breeds, and an even smaller one for, say, particular activities. So the market for 'training border collies' would probably be quite small but perhaps enough for a small business to make a living. Niches online are usually defined by their 'keywords' or 'key phrases' - the words that people use when they are searching for information. Google will tell you what they search for if you use their keyword tool.

Find Products
There are several ways to find products to sell. The best way for beginners is to become an affiliate. Affilaites are advertisers (you!) who advertise other people's products in return for a share of the profits when customers make a purchase. The best way into affiliation is through an affiliate network. These are website which promote the products of many companies, so that you have a wide choice. They'll also set up how you get paid. It's free to join. There are several out there. A good one is Commercial Junction.

Choose your Strategy
There are several ways to sell affiliate products online through a home based business, you just need somewhere to put your specific link to the sales page. This could be a conventional website, a hosted web page (like the one you are looking at now on Squidoo), an email, a blog, or a mixture of these and many others.

Attracting Customers
This is where your specialist knowledge comes in. The internet and its users have a huge appetite for fresh information. You can provide that information from your knowledge of your hobby, interest or pastime. There are many ways that you can use the internet to publish this information in a way that will attract visitors to it, and to your links to your affiliate products. This is the part of your business where you should be spending most of your time. After all, it is your specialist area. One way of ensuring you give it enough time is to have a guide to lead you through the 101 other things you need to do.
