Home Birth vs. Hospital Birth

Although many assume that giving birth in a hospital setting is the safest environment for both mother and baby, there is very little evidence to support that assumption. A brief look back through history can bear testimony to the lack of the modern hospital as we now know it, and not until the last century did women commonly give birth any place other than home.

Childbirth is an innate, natural biological process that Western society has turned into a dramatic medical event. It does not have to be so, however; in fact, there are certain women in parts of the world who actually give birth in the field while working. It is perfectly safe for women who want to have a true childbirth experience uninterrupted by medical intervention and pain medicine to give birth in a home setting. Chances are that your grandmother gave birth at home, perhaps with a midwife by her side.

  1. Advantages of Home Birth

Although hospital birthing is recommended for high risk pregnancies, for those women who are in good health there is no reason that a home birth cannot be achieved if it is the desire of the woman. For complicated pregnancies, however, hospital birthing can provide needed emergency care for both mother and baby should it be required. The same holds true for women who give birth prematurely, should the baby need specialized neonatal care.

Every woman has the capability of achieving birth, although she may lack confidence that she can do it. How many women, in the throws of childbirth have exclaimed that they just cannot do it, cannot push the baby out? I know this author did. But, to my amazement, I was able to give birth, not once but three times. Because birth is, as said before, a natural biological process, both mother and child have instincts that make the act of giving birth not a possibility, but an eventuality. This lack of confidence is one of the reasons that many women choose to give birth in a hospital setting, where they are certain that the science of medicine will aid them in delivery.

Advantages of Home Birth

There are many advantages to giving birth at home. Because a woman is not limited in the number of visitors she may receive, she can be the recipient of endless emotional support. She has more freedom to move about, in her own comfortable and familiar setting, to find comfort. She has privacy and can be more vocal about her wants and needs in a home setting. In essence, home birth allows a woman to be more in control of her labor and delivery, which is very empowering.

Further, a home birth is advantageous to the bonding that takes place between mother and baby from the moment the baby breathes air into his lungs. Unlike in a hospital, where baby would be ripped away from mother and analyzed, assessed, and washed, the home birth allows the mother to bond with the baby in a natural fashion, uninhibited by medical interventions. This bonding can be one of the most incredible moments in motherhood.
