The Making Of A Superman Room

We have a small (1140 sq. ft.) rambler that was originally built in 1952. It sits on a large (125 X 140) corner lot, that was fenced in when we bought it.

Technically, there was only one bedroom. The room we were using as the computer room didn't have a closet. We have a partially finished basement as well. We don't have the proper windows in the basement to actually have a bedroom down there, so the only choice we had was to turn the computer room into another bedroom.

We started with a plain white room with a neutral colored carpet on the floor. There was no closet. We think the previous owners had been experimenting with textures and stuff because the ceiling was textured and one of the four walls had straw stuck in it.

We knew the painting was going to take the longest so we did that first. We painted the textured wall blue. That was a nightmare! It took three coats of paint. We used Dutch Boy paint that we bought at Menard's.

The two end walls we painted red on top, a yellow stripe through the middle, and blue on the bottom. Each wall took two coats of paint each. The textured ceiling we painted yellow. That took two coats of paint. We bought a wall mural of New York City to put on the wall opposite the textured wall. We had to piece that together.

There are two windows in the room, so we bought one yellow set of blinds and one red set of blinds. They were room darkening blinds that we bought at Menard's also.

In the yellow strip down the middle of the two end walls, my husband hand drew Superman's logo. We tried and tried to buy a stencil or something that we could use, but we had no luck. Lucky for us, my husband is a pretty talented artist.

When we bought the house, several rooms had floor electric heaters in them. This room was one of them. My husband removed it, then put on moulding in the whole room. We painted the moulding red.

I think the carpet was the easiest part of the whole room. All we had to do was remove the neutral colored carpet and replace it with a dark blue carpet that we bought from Menard's again. I don't know how many trips we made to Menard's while we were doing this project. We left the original carpet padding on the floor, so we just laid the new carpet on top of it.

As I said at the beginning, the room had no closet in it. My husband built one and painted it to look like a telephone booth. We're still looking for life-sized Superman cutouts that we can paste on it.

We bought a Rubbermaid shelf set in primary colors, and a Rubbermaid storage thing with bins, also in primary colors, to use as his dresser.

The last thing we did, was buy a ceiling fan. We tried to find one in just the primary colors, but we didn't have any luck. We ended up buying a multi-colored one. My husband put it up, and we were done.

We've since added a wall clock, an alarm clock, a Superman fleece blanket, and a set of Superman sheets. When we find a good deal on something Superman-themed that we think will look cool in the room, we grab it. As my son gets older, he may want to add his own items.
