My middle son had scabies as a baby, we never did figure out where or how he got them. Since he had a lot of allergies, I took him to the doctor right away when he got the rash & it was cured really fast without infecting anyone in the house. Very informative lens, I'm sure it will help a lot of people.

Very interesting read. I have never had these mite (and hope I don't), but if I ever have to fight them I am glad to see there is natural remedies that work. My mother used to say: garlic and tea tree oil should be in ever pharmacy! Thank you so much for sharing all this information!
  • kab Jul 13, 2010 @ 8:43 pm | delete
I've seen scabies diagnosed with your average magic marker. Clean the itchy area. Mark it good with a washable magic marker (dark color), then wipe it off (even with a tiny bit of water). If the ink remains in some spots showing dark little lines, that is where the mite has burrowed into your skin and there is a tiny canal that allows the ink into it. It's gross, but now at least you know.
  • hayleylou Jul 18, 2010 @ 3:34 pm | delete
Never heard of this, but thanks for the info. It sounds like a good way of diagnosis.

This is a great resource for Scabies that you have created,......... is there anything that can't be treated by garlic, onion or tea tree oil??

I'm lucky that my dd hasn't had scabies, it's bad enough when she comes home from school with headlice - yuck!
  • hayleylou Apr 28, 2010 @ 4:35 am | delete

Can pets catch Scabies as well?
  • hayleylou Apr 15, 2010 @ 1:06 am | delete
Hi Pyngthyngs, thanks for your visit. Yes, pets can get scabies - it is known as Mange and can be extremely uncomfortable. It needs treating with the same urgency as human scabies.

It's so unfortunate that your son had to go through this experience. I can only imagine what he went through. Glad to know that you've found some sort of solution though. May others benefit from this. I have never had this experience nor known of anyone who might have had but thank you for sharing. Excellent lens.

Wow, Hayley! Very informative lens. I have three sons and, thank goodness, we haven't come across scabies although we've had just about anything else you can imagine. Now, at least, I'll know what to look for and where to turn if we ever end up with a case. (Loved the comment about the onion not making the best perfume!). Very well done.

Wow, great lens, kind of scary, make me itch. I'm also a mom but never heard of scabies. Will be watching out for this. Because my main language is no English as soon as a read your lens I started looking in the internet for the Spanish word for scabies. 5* and favorite it.

Great lens. I remember scabies from when I was a kid. It was not fun!
  • Pastiche Oct 7, 2009 @ 12:31 pm | delete
Arrgggh. As a mom I've had to deal with head lice on the kiddos and fleas and ticks on the cats and dogs. So far no scabies or bed bugs but the way the news looks these days, we've just been lucky to avoid these other pests so far. Thanks for making this informative lens.

grannysage - All 3 kids at once with it? If so that must have been a nightmare - all that itching. Yes you are right - parents should be given a manual on the birth of a child on all the illnesses, moods, phases and stages that you need to be able to recognise. Being a parent is the hardest but most rewarding job that there is!
  • hayleylou Sep 21, 2009 @ 7:16 am | delete
Head lice is another horrible itch. Harry got them when we lived in the UK at a nursery, I helped out there too - we both got them - it was awful. Took us a week to get rid. Again though it was the natural way that helped. [in reply to Rascal_The_Cat]

Interesting and complete lens about a problem that many families have met; that it is necessary to know, to intervene as soon as possible! I rated your lens 5 stars and I favorited it.

    Great information... a valuable resource. 5 *s.
  • grannysage Sep 19, 2009 @ 11:58 pm | delete
Goodness, I started itching as soon as I read this. All three of my children had scabies and one of them several times. I got so I recognized it right away. I also worked in a nursing home where we had frequent outbreaks....who knows which person brought them in but it spread like crazy.

Lots of good information here. I am glad you reassure parents that they haven't done anything wrong. It just comes with the territory of childraising.

Now that school's back in session, this is a pertinant topic indeed. Sorry to hear you felt so bad about your little guy's adventure of the itchy kind. We've had to deal with head lice with each of our kids over the years- not fun. I shaved all my long hair off once in desperation thinking we were all just passing it back and forth seeing how the kids were girls with very long, thick hair (and then the Robi comb arrived the next day from ebay- doh). But, it's only hair, it grew back.. and hmm.. maybe a good topic for a new lens now that I think of it :) Thanks for the great lens, 5*

Tara , I feel for you. Your poor baby - saw how much it aggravated my 5 year old. Harrys doc never mentioned about treating the whole family either. If the scabies has got as bad as the whole family getting it you really need to treat the mites head on. Get all the family treated at the same time to avoid it getting passed around again. Be sure all the households concerned are treated, wash sheets, bedding, clothes, cuddlies, do carpets, mattresses - basically anywhere the mites could have hung on to. There is a chance that when you go to the docs they will tell you not to bother with this (mine told me this) but if you dont they will be back. I would get rid of them asap before it gets work. Good luck, let me know how you get on.

I have an 18 month old that has been fighting this for 9 weeks now. It was first when she was sick with fever too and diagnosed scarlet fever with the rash. then it didnt go away and got worse with the burrow lines and what not. took her back and she saw a diff. dr. cuz her dr. wasnt there that day. and this dr. diagnosed her with scabies but told us to only put on affected area..nothing bout cleaning sheets, other mmembers putting the cream on, nothing. very vague. SO..she still had it a week later. went BACK and her dr. was out again so had to see yet another dr. that said it was "deff. not scabies, b/c it would be all over and it wasnt." he diagnosed it as allergies and took her off the cream for scabies. even though i questioned the burrow lines he said that it was from her scrathing.so my whole family now has it.dad.mom.4 brothers and my dad went to a skin specialist today who looked under scope and it is scabies.needless to say im going back to her dr. tom and raising hell!
