Home Security Advice.

In far too many burglaries the thief does not have to use any kind of force . . .

In many burglaries the burglar does not have to kick a door in or pry open a window, in fact the thief does not have to use any kind of force to gain entry to a home. He just walks right in through a door left unlocked or climbs through a window that has been carelessly left open.

How long does it take to close a window or lock a door behind you? Even slipping out for a few moments and leaving a door unlocked is an opportunity for a burglar, it only takes him a few moments to walk in and take your stuff. Read more here . . .  Burglary Prevention Tips

If your windows are fitted with good window locks, and they should be, a burglar will have to smash the glass if he is going to enter your home through the window. Breaking windows means making a noise and he may not want to do that, noise attracts attention.

But if that housebreaker believes that no one is going to hear he may take the chance and once the window is smashed the burglar is in. If glass break sensors protect your windows a siren sounds that is far louder than breaking glass, at the same time your monitored home security system alerts the authorities to the situation.

Home Security Marking

Home Security Marking

If a thief can see that your property is marked, perhaps with your postal code, he may have second thoughts about taking it, marked property is very difficult to sell on.

Another big advantage of security marking your valuables is that it makes the task of returning recovered stolen property to the rightful owner so much easier for the police.

After you have completed home security marking your valuable items take good photos of them and compile a home inventory list. Keep this list in a safe place, not at your home address, so in the unfortunate event of your security marked items being stolen you will have all the information needed to give the police and your insurance company.

Home Security Advice . . .

Tip

Do not have an address tag on your keys. If you should lose your keys, or if they get stolen, and they are marked with your address, a thief will know exactly where to come to help himself. If you lose your keys - immediately have your locks or the cylinder changed. It does not cost much and is far preferable than having the keys to your home in the hands of a thief.

Of course, you should never leave your keys with anyone that you do not completely trust. Ask yourself if you would trust them with your money? If the answer is no then don't trust them with your keys.

Tip

If you are out of your home for long periods, out at work in the day or out on the town for the evening, use timers to switch on and off your lights, radio and television at different times. Timers can be set to give a very good impression of someone being in your home, they are not expensive, are effective and are simple to set up and use.

Tip

Do not give details to strangers about the times that you are likely to be out of your home. If someone phones pretending to be a telemarketer or conducting a survey and you inform them you are out at work all day then that information could be an early Christmas present for a thief.

Tip

Do not open your door unless you are sure of the identity of any visitors, don't be a victim of distraction burglary.

Tip

Without a doubt, the best thing that you can do to protect your home and family from crime, is to join and actively participate in your local Neighborhood Watch.

Window Security Film . . .

Window bars or shutters are highly visible methods of protecting your windows. The burglar can see the bars, which in many cases will put him off from even trying to enter your home through windows.

However many of us think that bars or shutters are an ugly method of keeping the burglar out.

Window security film is an alternative to window security bars and is, in most cases, invisible. The intruder won't know it is there until he tries to break the glass - a hard enough swipe could break the glass but the thief still can't get in . . . the discrete protection of security film

Tip Toe Through Your Tulips . . .

Tip

Theft from gardens is on the increase. Make sure that nothing is left out in your garden, put your garden tools and equipment away when you have finished using them. Make sure that kids toys are not left out. It is a good idea to secure items within . . . continue reading Garden Theft

Tip

Keep any trees, plants and shrubs that are near doors and windows trimmed right down so prowlers can't make use of shadows. You might want to think about removing trees that are growing close to your home, there is no sense in providing cover for a burglar to work unseen.

Tip

Avoid using a small number of high wattage lamps for your outside security lighting. With the bright light these lamps throw any spaces that they do not cover tends be lost in shadow. Instead use a larger number of smaller wattage lamps arranged to cover all spaces and you will do more to deny the burglar dark hiding places.

Home Security and Your Garage Door.

Do you have a garage attached to your house? Does the garage have an internal door that goes through into the rest of your home? If you do then you have a home security risk.

Once he has got himself inside your garage the thief can take his own sweet time to break through that internal door. Who can see him? Keep thieves out of your garage - Garage Door Security.

What do you do if you see suspicious behavior?

You can ignore it. After all it is nothing to do with you, why get involved, keep your nose out.

If you close your eyes to suspect behavior when your senses tell you that something is not right then the villains get away with their nasty deeds. The likelihood is that they go on to commit many more crimes. . .

. . .the next home that they rob could be yours, the next person that they assault could be a member of your family.

Never put yourself in personal danger but don't close your eyes to suspect behavior, call the police. Don't leave it to someone else, other people will be just as reluctant to get themselves involved as you are . . . you do it.

Use your cell phone, we all carry one of those these days don't we. Try not to use it right in front of the suspects, move on a bit and get yourself clear of danger, make a mental note as to what the suspects are wearing, their height and weight, hair and skin color etc., so you can give the police a good description.

Don't leave it to someone else.
