Fruity Loops 10 Guitar Recording Tutorial

Ranked #566 in Music, #13,388 overall

Why spend money in a recording studio when you can simply just do it yourself?

I recommend Fruity Loops Studio 9 XXL Producer Edition to not only record your guitar, but to produce professional sounding beats without having to switch between programs, it's very versatile. That is why I love it. And for those who are on a very tight budget Download the demo!

Unfortunately, you will not be able to save your progress, but you will be able to render an .mp3 file of your project.

Getting Started

Almost.....

Before we start I just want to say, you NEED to follow the instructions on the pictures provided, and all download links are tested and safe.

First, you need ASOI4ALL installed on your computer. You NEED this to record with Fruity Loops. It is a sound driver. It usually comes with FL, but sometimes people don't install it because the don't know what it is. Here's the download link: ASIO4ALL

Second, you will want to get a sound-gate VST plug-in. This will eliminate "hissing" and other unwanted noises from the recording. it is called FloorFish. You can download it here: The Fish Fillets. This comes with 2 other plug-ins. And yes, they are free :)

Now once you download it it you will follow the instructions in the PDF file. Very easy to do.

Now Open Fruity Loops.

After this, you will:

1. Open the mixer. (Press F9)
2. Click where the red box is in this picture.

Photobucket

Now, a menu will appear:
1: Hover over 'Select' then click 'More'
2: A new window will pop-up, click 'Refresh'
3: After it is done refreshing, find and check BLOCKFISH, FLOORFISH, and SPITFISH. (or whichever ones you installed)

That's it. Your new plug-ins are ready to go!

Enabling Your Hardware

Setting the input on the record track.

1. Connect your guitar to your foot-pedal or effects processor
2. Connect your pedal to your computer
3. Open the mixer(Press F9)
4. Select your stereo input, or mono input.

NOTE: You must switch from your primary sound driver to ASIO to record. Go to 'Options' at the top left-hand of the screen--------->Audio settings, then select ASIO4ALL. (pic at top of page if you missed it)

DOUBLE NOTE: Your input options will not read: soundMAX Digital Audio. Unless of course you have soundMAX. :P

Now, if your guitar is plugged in properly to the computer, you should be able to hear it through the speakers. You may use an amp modeling software also, but I would just use a guitar pedal if you are just learning how to do this.

Oh yeah, don't forget to tune.

One Last Step Before We Record...

You will need to enable the VST effects to your recording track.

1. Open up the mixer(Press F9)
2. Click on 'Insert 1' or whichever track you decide to designate to record. Press F2 to rename it to 'Record'. This is just a reminder so you know which track to record on. Now make sure that that track is selected.
3. Now, remember that little red box in the image from before? Click on it, and rollover 'Select' and find 'FLOORFISH'.

After this the control panel for FloorFish should pop up. Adjust levels to your liking.
This is what it looks like:

Adjust settings to you liking, and you're good to go!

My Fruity Loops Demo Song...

Just a little number I'm working on using the same exact methods described in this tutorial. I did not go over how to add the drums like I did in my song because that's a whole new tutorial by itself. Enjoy! :)

I`m trying to record bass and guitar using a mixer, into the playlist. Everything seems to be okay, but whenever I try recording, it just stops abruptly after some random time (sometimes 10-20 seconds, sometimes just after a minute, etc.). It`s really annoying, and I can`t figure out, why it`s doing it. Any clues?

Whenever I connect my guitar and start recording, the software stops working and making a noise (popping noise) on my headphone. Do you have any solution for this problem? I connect my guitar to a computer using zoom g9.2tt.

Is it possible to use fx plugins on FL while playing your guitar and hearing the 'effect' live?
  • Jhoff Jul 16, 2011 @ 3:22 am | delete
Yes, all you have to do is open the mixer and select the track that your guitar is located on and apply the effect. To get your guitar to play live sound through your speakers, you need to select any channel on the mixer. (Just use mixer channel 1 for test purposes). When that track is selected, click on the button that says (none) at the top of the mixer and select your ASIO hardware. Then you can apply the effect. Also, make sure your guitar is plugged into the computer before you start the program.

Great lens on Fruity Loops. Lensrolling to my recording lenses. I have Windows 7 so this might not work for me - I guess I will stick to my analogue recording methods for now and just import files - BUT this could be really helpful to anyone without a portastudio. Blessed today!
  • Jhoff May 11, 2011 @ 5:45 pm | delete
Thank you! I will be Lensrolling some of your some of your lenses as well. The steps are almost identical for configuring it to work with Windows 7. All you have to is change your audio setting in your audio properties.

hey man you seem to know what your doing, if i recorded as an audio clip for seperate guitar track, but my song only has 2 guitar tracks and i need to line them up in a a place so theyll play in sync at the right time how do i do that? Basically how do i line guitars up
  • Jhoff Feb 28, 2011 @ 4:02 pm | delete
When you go into the playlist editor, you should see your two guitar tracks. click on one of them ( right of left click, can't remember ) and drag it to lone it up. Also you might want to zoom in as well to make sure that they are lined up accurately.

    Hope this helps!

Good tutorial!!! but i having a problem... I've done all the steps correctly but when i strum my guitar it lags. like when i play fast it sounds like it's got delay on it..what is this???and how do i fix it????
  • Jhoff Feb 9, 2011 @ 12:43 pm | delete
Go into the .options menu at the top then click audio settings. an turn the interpolation down to 64 point sync. if that doesn't help click on the show ASIO Panel and move the slider down from default to about 128. If that doesn't help, move it down some more.
  • Co Dee Apr 21, 2011 @ 8:33 pm | delete
I have been having this same problem.... i was researching it and thats how i came across this site..... I havent tried messing with the interpolation but i did move the slide alllllllll the way down and it still lags.... i cant record over a previously recorded guitar track becuase of the lag.... makes me sound like i got even less rhythm than i already do.
