Building A Hovercaft From Home
I cleaned out the garage and got my tools organized. Stocked the fridge with a case of beer and I read the plans over twice and made a list of materials I needed and off to the hardware store I went.
Homebuilt Hovercraft - The Build
I came home with my supplies the same time as the wife was unloading groceries. She just shook her head. I ended up buying some wood, adhesive, various glues, clamps, also some foam and fiberglass.
Following the hovercraft plan was pretty straight forward and the build was going pretty smooth.
Nothing really complicated to building a hovercraft. Some wood cutting, gluing and clamping. I have a good table saw and band saw but you can use hand tools. I picked up the motor for under $20 at a garage sale! You could build one fairly cheap if you do a little scrounging.
Overall I really enjoyed the building process. I come home after work, eat dinner then it was off to the garage. My favorite part of the day.
I completed my first hovercraft in less than a week. I could have built it faster but like I said I enjoyed building it and took my time.
The first one I built I stuck to the plans I bought. I was already planning my second one. I finished it and fired it up. I was all grins taking it around the neighborhood for it's first test flight. I came back and the neighbors were all gathered around wanting to see the finished product.
Homebuilt Hovercraft Part 2
I made this one a 2 seater, much bigger engine and I did some foam and fiberglass work to build a body for it.
It drives like a little race car. I take it over land, water and snow in the winter. That's what is so great about hovercraft, you can fly it over just about anything.
If you are interested here is the best set of plans I found for building your first one. After you build one you will be hooked, they are a blast....

I don't get it, If people can't afford the plans how are you going too buy the materials needed to build a hovercraft? Or even afford to run it?
Will all the materials be magically supplied also?
Good luck

Hi there
I have just completed my first year of Mechanical Engineering (BSc Mech Eng) at the University of Johannesburg and am planning to build a hovercraft during University holidays (Nov-Feb). This site has been really helpful.
