DIY Solar Water Heater Plans: Spend Less Than $100 and Save $1000s In Home Energy Costs?
Ranked #50,212 in How-To, #517,415 overall
Wouldn't It Be Cool If We Could Inexpensively Convert Enough Energy From Sunlight To Run Our Own Homes? It Must Be Impossible...Right? Nope, Not Any More...
I am making this page on homemade solar water heaters because I have a very real desire to encourage people to stop thinking that there is nothing we can do individually to cut our personal energy expenses, reduce the damage to our environment and dependence on foreign sources for fuel.
I know that I always made the assumption that we were at the mercy of our government, oil producing countries or the power companies to solve all of these major problems. After all they have the resources to do the research and make big investments in the necessary technology... right?
One day a realization hit me like a ton of bricks. It is not in the best interest of any of these organizations to make cheap, pollution free energy because it works against their short term goals. Energy in the way it is acquired, processed ,distributed and regulated is very profitable. Changing drastically and suddenly the way of the current energy industry means that companies could go out of business, employees would lose their jobs, stock holders would lose their investments and the possibility for worsening our economy would be very real.
What a dilemma. Is it then a hopeless situation?... No way...not at all!
Here are some of the things that I have learned that have given me hope:
1. There is no real energy shortage just man-made shortages of certain fuels like oil and gas. The sun is said to produce enough energy every single day to supply all of the needs of every man, woman and child in the entire world for a year.
2. Using the Sun's energy for our household needs is extremely inexpensive and almost pollution free.
3. Technology for building our own devices for capturing the Sun's energy is basically simple and has been around for a long long time. In fact, solar water heaters were said to be used around the time Abraham Lincoln was the U.S. President.
This Squidoo Page will providing information about building simple solar water heaters in an effort to reduce your yearly costs by $1000s. For less than $100, using simple tools and common skills you can make hot water from the sun. And it only takes about 3-5 days.
Please read the reviews of plans for building solar water heaters and other topical articles (to be announced). Consider adding your ideas, experience and wisdom to the reader comment section at the bottom of this page.
