How to Make Creative Christian Bible Character Costumes for Kids
My younger son goes to a Christian preschool and for the week of Halloween they had a Reformation party where they dressed up in their favorite bible character costume.
I'm not a very creative person and I was getting a little nervous about what I could possibly dress my son up in that wouldn't look like all the other kids. I was envisioning all 18 kids in his class looking exactly the same in their long flowing cloaks, with belts around their waist. I mean how different can you make Moses look from Jonah or Noah. I also imagined all the girls coming dressed up as a beautiful angel in a white flowing sheet with a homemade halo.
I wanted my son's costume to be unique and creative. Did I already say that I'm not a very creative person. In order to get some ideas for biblical costumes I did what anyone of us would do when we are searching for something that we can't find. I turned to Google. I searched through all kinds of websites about christian costumes. I didn't really want to order anything online because I was afraid it wouldn't get here in time for the party. And besides, they all looked the same to me anyway. Without any type of context, like a drama play, people would have a hard time determining who the Bible character even was.
Then I found a GREAT costume idea. It was a homemade Noah's Ark costume. The Noah's Ark that was pictured was a little too elaborate for me to tackle. And quite honestly I couldn't really follow all the directions. So I did my best to make a modified version with the one box I had on hand at home. Here's my pictures and "somewhat" step by step instructions. This was the first time I've ever embarked on such a big arts and crafts type project. Did I already say that I'm not very creative? :)

1Start with a Box

I started with a plain old box. It was a medium sized moving box from Home Depot that I had lying around the house. Halfway through the project I realized that it wasn't quite big enough. So I had to use some left over scrap pieces of cardboard to patch up the boat a little. So, my advice is err on the side of caution. Use a bigger box to start with. You can always trim down the pieces smaller if you need to. -
2Cut Open the Box so it Lays Flat

The first thing I did with my box was flattened it all the way down. Unattach the seam where the sides connect to one another, so your box will lay down flat on the floor. The cut apart each section so that you have at least 3 big pieces. -
3Cut the Box into Sections, then Cut 2 Half Moon Shapes

Then I cut out what would be the sides of the boat. This should be like a half moon shape. I put one cut out on top of the other and used a pen to draw the shape on the second piece of cardboard so that they would be the same size. -
4Use the 3rd piece of cardboard to cut a Football Shape for the Ark Deck, leaving some "tabs" on it

The third piece will be used to make the top deck of the boat. I cut out a hold in the deck that my son will stand in. I simply had him stand on the piece of cardboard to I could judge how big to make the hole. The hole had to be big enough for him to get in past his hips, but small enough that it didn't just fall right off of him. At the end I ended up putting some straps on the boat (colored like rainbows) that went over his shoulders to help hold the boat up. So the size of the hold didn't matter as much.
The little tabs that I left on here, I then bent down and they helped me attach the deck to the sides of the boat. -
5Sew the Deck onto the Sides of the Ark

After I had all three of my pieces of cardboard cut out I began the very tedious process of attaching the sides of my ark to the top deck. Remember those funny looking tabs I left on the deck? I folded then down on the inside and used some duct tape to help temporarily attach the top deck to the sides. Then I used a plastic needle and some cord to "sew" the deck onto the sides of the boat. I found it easier to push my needle through the cardboard after I made a small guideance hold with a nail first. -
6Decorate the Ark with Animals

After I had the ark "sewn" together, we then decorated it will some Stick On Foam Animal Stickers on the sides, lining the animals up, two by two. The water on the bottom is also cut out from a foam craft sheet.

7Super Glue vs. Hot Glue Gun

We also purchased a small multipack of toy animals for about $3.00 from Walmart and I attempted to use super glue to attach them to the deck.
Super Glue Disaster
But my super glue pen leaked, and super glue ran down the side of the pen immediately glueing my hands to the super glue pen. For about an hour, I worked to free my fingers from the pen and each other. Once the super glue touched my skin, it bonded immediately and I couldn't even pull my fingers apart. I soaked my fingers in nail polish remover for at least 30 minutes before I could even get them apart.
After the super glue incident (which my mom had to come rushing over to help me get undone) we went to my parent's house and Grandpa helped us secure the remaining toy animals on the top of the deck with a hot glue gun. The hot glue gun worked WAY better than the super glue did. We just put a big blob off hot glue all around the animals hooves, securing them onto the Ark deck.

8Attach Rainbow Straps

Rainbow Straps
I also made rainbow straps that went over my son's shoulders to help him hold up the Ark. I used colored yarn and wound it around another piece of twine. The straps then made a rainbow over the top of his shoulders when he was wearing the Ark, a symbol of God's promise never to flood the earth like that again.
