Honda Transalp modifications

Making your own state of perfection...

The Honda Transalp is a great all-around bike.  Many of us, however, have our own ideas of what our TA should look like and how it should perform in a given environment.    This lens will be outlining some of the various modifications that have gained popularity over the years and providing a centralized listing from which to choose the mods that suit your riding style.

The modification bin

Known modifications roughly grouped together as they relate to specific areas of the motorcycle, i.e. fuel system, suspension, luggage, etc.

This module covers the basic areas of the bike most commonly modified. More of a place holder at the moment...
  • Suspension: 1. Lift (XR conversion) I should soon have more of the rear shock spacers available for the XR fork swap. Please drop a comment below if you'd like to get in line for one of these highly-prized artifacts! They will be current manufacture from steel bar stock, turned on a CNC lathe to your choice of 20, 25, or 30mm in length. A literal bolt-on mod that will lift the rear to match the XR forks in front. MUCH cheaper than a custom shock!
    2. Lower (for shorter inseams)
    3. Africa Twin conversion (Aluminum swingarm w/ disc brake) What would a brand-new Africa Twin-style swingarm and disc brake package be worth for your Transalp? That is, if it was a direct bolt-on replacement? Leave your comments below...

    Exhaust system: Supertrapp, customs

    Engine/transmission: As if...

Fuel system: 1. Africa Twin tank conversion

Bodywork: 1. Africa Twin cowl conversion 2. Dual headlight conversion (stock cowl)

Electrical system: 1. Lighting 2.Accessory wiring
Anyone willing to contribute? I'm a bit sketchy on the wiring bits...

Aftermarket accessories: 1. Engine guards 2. Luggage
    3. Windscreens 4.Grip heaters 5. GPS 6. Tires

What's in my garage?

All this time and it still hasn't been mistaken for a Harley

My '89 Transalp has the basic XR suspension conversion, Givi crash bars, and a set of US military Mermite cans mounted on Happy Trail (Go ahead, ask me about Happy Trail's "customer service") racks. In addition to the carny paint job and graphics, I've mounted a Garmin GPS on the bars, put spacers in the bars to raise them 30mm, and an aluminum plate/duffel combination mounted to the factory luggage rack.

ADVrider Transalp Modification thread
If it hasn't been done here, it probably hasn't been done.
Givi engine guard installation
Page with detailed instructions and photos showing the installation process. Accurately describes, at least in my experience, what to expect and when to expect it.
Gandy's TA/AT project
Takes forever to load but has a picture of very nearly everything. Surely there's something here to catch your interest.
Jeff's Africa Alp conversion thread
One of the earliest I'm aware of.
