Zodiacal Constellations
History and Theory
The precise origins of the twelve constellations of the zodiac are unknown. In particular the reasons for the prominence given to animals is unclear. The shape of the constellations themselves were probably not the main factor, as most of them bear little or no resemblance to the mythical characters after which they are named (except Scorpio). Their origins are more likely to be in the belief of early peoples that events on earth were mirrored in the heavens above them. Over time a process probably developed where various important archetypal characters in ancient myth were linked to the sky by the 'discovery' of a pattern of stars in their image.
Western zodiac
The modern western astrological signs are simplifications of conventional pictorial representations of the signs, used since Hellenistic times.
Below are the ecliptic longitudes for a tropical zodiac where 0° is understood as the vernal equinox:
Aries (0°) (The Ram)
Taurus (30°) (The Bull)
Gemini (60°) (The Twins)
Cancer (90°) (The Crab)
Leo (120°) (The Lion)
Virgo (150°) (The Virgin)
Libra (180°) (The Scales)
Scorpio (210°) (The Scorpion)
Sagittarius (240°) (The Archer)
Capricorn (270°) (The Sea-goat)
Aquarius (300°) (The Water Carrier)
Pisces (330°) (The Fishes)
In astronomy the zodiacal constellations are a convenient way of marking the ecliptic (the sun's)path across the sky. The zodiac is also a way for astronomers to mark the path of the moon and planets, as their movements also remain within these constellations. Apart from this role, the zodiacal constellations have no extra significance to astronomers than any other constellation.
Zodiac in astronomy
Unlike the zodiac signs in astrology, which are all thirty degrees in length, the astronomical constellations vary widely in size. The boundaries of all the constellations in the sky were set by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1930. This was essentially a mapping exercise to make the work of astronomers more efficient, the boundaries of the constellations are not in any meaningful sense an 'equivalent' to the zodiac signs. Along with the twelve original constellations, the boundaries of a thirteenth constellation, Ophiuchus, have been set by astronomers within the bounds of the zodiac.
Comparison to modern systems
Though perhaps as old as 5,000 years, the zodiac coordinate system boasts advantages over its more common modern counterparts. Since the coordinate system is celestially centered, it is insulated from the many eccentricities of Earth's motion: including its rotation, time, precession, nutation and its elliptical and perturbed orbit around our Sun. To use the zodiac coordinate system all one has to know is where to find one of the nodal constellations with fixed reference points for the system: Taurus or Scorpio. Since those constellations are located on opposite sides of the ecliptic along the zodiac, one should always be visible in the night sky. These constellations are both located within the prominent band of cloud and dust of the Milky Way. From these constellations astronomers can orient themselves for locating any point in the coordinate system.

The modern, commonly used tropical systems require an observer to know the current mean sidereal time, the observer's terrestrial longitude and latitude, and account for other peculiarities of Earth's motion. Of course, modern astronomical computers handle most of the tasks for observers, but it involves a large effort by many different astronomers behind the scenes.
Much of the motion of the stars in modern tropical coordinate systems can be attributed wholly to these peculiarities of Earth's motion. Astronomers make the distinction between the proper motion of a star (typically relatively subtle), from the other motion that arises totally from the designation of a tropical rather than sidereal coordinate system. One example where this exhibits itself is in the constellation boundaries drawn up by the IAU. The neat constellation boundaries drawn in 1930 exhibit increasingly distorted boundary lines over time. This may seem like something of little consequence, but why bother drawing neat boundaries around constellations if they become erratic.
These advantages make the zodiac coordinate system a very efficient system of coordinates in terms of requiring very little human-hours of labor to use and maintain: issues particularly important to early astronomers, typically working in isolation from one another most of the time.
The key disadvantage of a zodiac system of coordinates will manifest, when the nodal star that serve as fixed reference point for the system, exhibit significant motion so that within the system of coordinates every other star appears to move dramatically in unison. For example if a selection of an asteroid or an entire galaxy outside our Milky Way was chosen as a guide will lead to this condition. The only other sidereal coordinate system in common use today (that shares many of the zodiac's advantages) is the galactic coordinate system. In galactic coordinates, the plane of the Milky Way and its own axial center serve as the fixed referents. These are fairly logical reference points for a coordinate system, though they cannot be located with the naked eye.
Another disadvantage relates to the apparatus required for orienting one to the coordinate systems. Using geocentric coordinates astronomers can easily calibrate their instruments to the fixed reference point. As long as astronomers can obtain an accurate compass reading, they can orient themselves to a geocentric coordinate system (such as ecliptic or equatorial coordinates). Using zodiac coordinates requires an astronomer to locate the correct star, whether Antares or Aldebaran, and the correct constellation- Scorpio or Taurus respectively- and make an accurate reading of the position of that star and accurately orient that star to the ecliptic. This may take more skill than a mere compass reading: especially for amateur astronomers.

Colours associated with the Crab are white, silver, and pale yellow.
Cancer birthstones are the ruby and the pearl traditionally. Silver reflects its environment in its shiny polished surface, yet it can tarnish and become dull if not properly cared for. The same way, your sensitive nature reflects the people and circumstances surrounding you. The precious ruby, is one of the hardest minerals known, while the pearl is soft and easily scratched. Here we have the two contrasting sides of the Cancerian personality: hard and determined, yet soft and vulnerable. Cancerian flowers are the water lily (lotus), iris, white poppy, white carnation and southern magnolia.
Compatibilities
Cancer is widely thought to be compatible with the same element signs, Pisces and Scorpio. Cancer is also often considered to be good with Taurus.
Cancer people are easily hurt by the slights of others. These are very complex people, sometimes appearing extremely strong and at other times to be as vulnerable as a child.
These people are remarkably good at accumulating things; indeed, they can be unwilling to throw anything out, even relationships that have passed their use-by date. They are generally over-anxious in financial matters, and make great efforts to gather in money; as a rule, they have unusual ups and downs in their early life and so they are compelled to work to keep ahead, but once they get on their feet they keep there. If channeled in the right direction, their enormous sensitivity can become a great source of strength. Once they overcome their touchiness and master their turbulent emotions, their intellect and imagination enable them to become a success in almost anything they undertake.
The main problem for them is to remember not to let the powerful, turbulent emotions of the moment crowd out their normally rational judgment. Their intuitions are reliable and should be trusted.
They are generally gifted with strong imaginations, and it is very easy for them to become excellent artists, writers, composers, or musicians. At heart they are romantic and of a very loving and affectionate disposition.
On the other hand these people are perhaps the most sensitive natures from any other class of people and if aren't recognized they quickly give up or get depressed and melancholy. Above all, they require encouragement and appreciation. Their deep sensitivity presents them with valuable and illuminating intuitions, especially regarding those they care for. Such people have deep love for what they call "their own people," for family customs and for tradition.

According to one interpretation, the Virgo constellation depicts Astraea, the virgin daughter of the god Zeus and the goddess Themis. Astraea was known as the goddess of justice, and was identified as this constellation due to the presence of the scales of justice (Libra) nearby, and supposedly ruled the world with her wise ways until mankind became so callous that she returned to the skies, disgusted. Virgo is also identified with Persephone, daughter of Demeter (goddess of agriculture and guardian of marriage). Persephone was the goddess of innocence and purity, then later on became the Queen of the Underworld, when she was abruptly snatched away by Hades. One other more probable myths is the one about Asclepius the god of medicine and healing in ancient Greek mythology. And With his wife Epione mother of Panacea, the goddess of medicines, Hygieia, the goddess of health. She was probably also the mother of the famous physicians Machaon and Podalirius, who are mentioned in the Iliad of Homer.
The astrological symbol of Virgo is said to represent the arms and torso of the virgin holding a sheaf of wheat.

Some modern astrologers consider Pluto to be a more appropriate ruler over the sign, citing the reason for Mars having initially ruled the sign being that Pluto had not yet been discovered. In 2006 Pluto was reclassified by astronomers as a "dwarf planet", and therefore is no longer considered a planet in astronomy, although this has not reduced its significance to astrologers as the modern ruler of Scorpio.

Mythology
One of the most popular stories regarding the mythological origin of Pisces is the story of Aphrodite and Eros. The story involves Aphrodite and her son Eros escaping from the terrible monster Typhon by turning themselves into fish and hiding underwater until it was safe to come back to the surface. As fish, they tied their tails together with a cord so that they wouldn't lose one another while swimming in the darkness of the deep water. Upon hearing their tale, Zeus rewarded the pair by placing them among the stars as the constellation of Pisces.
As a constellation, Pisces has been almost universally associated with female deities.
The Pisces symbol (the H) is often associated with Helen of Troy - Beauty and love.
In the story they were actually turned into Dolphins which are mammals but at the time they were mistaken for fish.
Associations
Pisces is the twelfth astrological sign in the Zodiac, which originates from the Pisces constellation. In western astrology this sign is no longer aligned with the constellation because of the precession of the equinoxes. Pisces is represented by a pair of fish that are swimming in opposite directions, but remain held together at the tail by a cord. In astrology, Pisces is considered a water sign, and is one of four mutable signs. Like the rest of the watery signs, Pisces is considered a "negative", feminine sign, which in Astrology means it is rather introvert. Being the twelfth sign, Pisces is associated with the astrological 12th house.
Pisces has been traditionally ruled by the planet Jupiter, but since its discovery, Neptune has been considered a modern ruler of this sign. Some astrologers mostly use one to the exception of the other, but some consider them to be co-rulers of this sign and essentially use both.
Compatibilities
Pisces is widely considered to be naturally compatible with the same element signs, Cancer and Scorpio. Many consider it to also be good with Taurus.

The Four Elements
Earth, Air, Fire and Water
AirAir is associated with the octahedron; air is considered to be both hot and wet. As it grows warm and rarefied, air becomes fire; as it cools and condenses it becomes water, then earth and rock. There is also a link of air with intelligence and soul (psyche).
* The cardinal direction of east.
* Yellow, or pastel colors. (Sometimes green or light blue.)
* The wand or the athame.
* Woodwind instruments.
* The suit of Swords in the Tarot Minor Arcana.
* Mind, intellect, consciousness, study, communication.
* The alchemic notion of Azoth.
* Sunrise, childhood, spring, beginnings.
* Incense.
* Birds, insects, flying creatures.
* Masculine energy.
* Many gods and goddesses, including Aradia, Athena, Hermes, Mercury, Nuit, Shu, Thoth, and Zeus.
The alchemical symbol for air is an upward-pointing triangle, bisected by a horizontal line.
Water
Water commonly associated with the qualities of emotion and intuition. The Platonic solid associated with water is the icosahedron which is formed from twenty equilateral triangles. This makes water the element with the greatest number of sides. Water is both cold and wet, and occupies a place between air and earth among the elemental spheres.
water is associated with the West, autumn, and the color blue on the physical plane. It is sometimes represented by a white crescent, a downward pointing triangle, the chalice, the bell, shells, sapphires, lapis lazuli, tears, and the cauldron. Water represents emotions, wisdom, the soul, and femininity.
The manifestations of the element of water are rivers, oceans, lakes, wells, fog, all drinks, and the rain. Animals, especially the dolphin, seal, turtle, frog, and all types of fish, are also thought to personify the element of water. The astral creatures of water, known as elementals, are the Undine/Mermaid, Oreade/Naiad, and Sea Serpent/Dragon. Water's place on the pentagram is the upper right point.
Fire
Fire has been an important part of many cultures and religions, from pre-history to modern day, and was vital to the development of civilization.
Fire is associated with Hades, from the creative fire, associated with Hephaistos. Goddess Hekate was called Pyrphoros (Fire-bearing), Pyripnon (Fire-breather), Daidoukhos (Torch-bearer) and Phosphoros (Light-bearer).
Fire the element with the smallest number of sides, the heat of fire feels sharp and stabbing (like little tetrahedra).
* The South,
* The Summer
* The color red on the physical plane.
* The athame or ceremonial dagger.
Fire represents the creativity and passion that all intellectual and emotional beings have. It is an active force that has the passion to create and animate things. The element is also very rational and quick to "flare up" as is the personality of many "fire-children."
Earth
Fire is commonly associated with qualities of practicality, restraint and materialism. It was also associated with the physical, sensual aspects of life.
Earth is the cube which is formed from six triangular sides. This places earth between fire (four triangular sides) and air (eight triangular sides).
Earth is both cold and dry.
In alchemy, the chemical element of salt was associated with earth and its alchemical symbol was a downward-pointing triangle, bisected by a horizontal line.
