A Trip For Horse Lovers - Chincoteague Island, Virginia

Assetegue is a National Wildlife Refuge and National Seashore.

You can bike and hike on designated trails in the Refuge - keeping a look-out for heards of ponies. Other popular-to-spot creatures include herons, and cranes.

We always stay at the Refuge Inn - with a room on the Ground floor - on the "Pony Side".

The hotel owns ponies, penned adjacent to the hotel, which ensures you WILL see horses during your trip - and see them often - and see them up close!

Buy feed for just 50 cents a bag, they will trott on over to you. Go in the Spring, and there will probably be babies too. Each morning, our daughter jumped out of bed and pulled back the drapes to "See the Ponies". Here she is feeding them and patting them!

Oh... right... the Refuge Inn also..... is located less than 1 mile from the bridge to Asseteague.... has a great indoor-outdoor swimming pool and hot tub .... included "expanded continental breakfast" .... and clean rooms & friendly service.

Try a Pony riding lesson at the Chincoteauge Pony Center. Even if your child (or you) have no horse riding experience, it will be a fabulous and highly memorable activity for any child who loves horses.

The Pony Center also offers pony rides, a pony show in the evening, and shows a film of famous Annual Chincoteague Pony Swims.

They also features the most extensive collection of horse themed items for purchase I have seen - on Chincoteague, or elsewhere.

She will want some horse apparel to wear on her horse lover trip. Choose a beautiful knit top before you go, so everyone will know who the horse lover(s) in your group are!

Its hard for me to imagine a day when the Chincoteage Ponies will not roam free on Asseteague, as they have since long before we even knew they were there.

Yet, there are other wild horses within America too, some of whom need our help to ensure they have land to roam. I, myself, just became aware of the efforts of Madeleine Pickens today. She has developed a solution to save these horses and save tax dollars in the process.
