Hostgater Review

Ranked #117,259 in Entertainment, #1,270,493 overall

After using many Different types of Hostgator accounts I thought it would be good make a personal review so others know if Hostgator is a good shared host, reseller or dedicated hosting company.

In fact, I've used multiple Dedicated Server Hosts and shared hosts since 1997.

As things have changed since then there's a few great hosts left, Hostgator is one of them and let me tell you why.

First off I first used Host Gators shared hosting many years ago, I believe it was back in 2002 (business grew exponentially and we require mutiple dedicated
servers now).

So, the first thing you need to decide if what kind of hosting do you need, if you're only going to have 1 website then the hatchling is probably fine for you which is only $4.95/month.

However I would recommend at least the baby for $7.95 since you get unlimited domains to put on the server, so if you get another domain you can just set it up on the same account, no extra cost.

Remember we are still talking about shared hosting, and shared hosting does have its limits, which is probably fine for most people, however if you plan on have a lot of traffic (hundred of thousands of hits a month) you're going to have to get a better plan (plus if you're getting that kind of traffic the cost should be peanuts compared to your profitability).

If you're interested in a little bigger server Hostgator offers Reseller Hosting which means you could sell your own hosting to others on their server. So say you get the Copper Reseller plan for $34.95 a month and get 50-75 people to host with you, you could make some decent money, even if you on;y charged $2/month or so.

Now don't get too many dollar signs in your eyes just yet, the lower plans limit how much bandwidth your server can use (and diskspace) so you will only be able to host as much until the space is used or bandwidth is gone, so you have to set limits (which is very easy in the control panel).

Which brings me to the point. One of my favorite features of Hostgator is the Cpanel. Anything you need to do is right there graphically for you on the web.

Want to add a subdomain? Simple, click Cpanel on that domain, scroll down, click add subdomain, enter what you want it to be called, submit, done, it's all setup!

Want an even cooler feature? Fantastico. If you want to setup a blog it literally takes 2 clicks and the latest wordpress, Nucleus or even your own Wiki. Check the Video Below for a overview of the control panel.
