A Long Tale ...

People like choice, but don't like to be overwhelmed by choices. Give customers a short list of products from their own very specific niche market, and you'll do well.

The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More

The Paunchy Middle

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Amazon.com carries more titles than local bookstores, and that customers take advantage of that fact. It's curious to me that The Long Tail has generated as much "buzz" as it has by elaborating on that premise.

How does that information help Jo(e) online marketer, assuming that (s)he lacks the resources to put 25 Million pages online? Where does one find the "paunchy middle" between the big head and the long tail?

The Wisdom of Crowds

Companies spend millions on market research, because you just never know what the "average" consumer wants. The best thing you can do is listen to the crowd and give them what they're asking for!

Catch a Wave

One way is to link to emerging products before the competiton gets on the bandwagon. The web is great for finding specific information, but trends are set in motion by the one-size-fits-all mentality of the traditional mass media.

For instance, aged video game Dance Dance Revolution hit #1 on these lists after a 10 -12 second product placement on "Ugly Betty." I did NOT see that coming!

I've resyndicated some of this information with the help of Feedburner, and I've found that sometimes a product pops up that I've seen on television, or in the newspapers -- but more often, I have no idea why a particular widget has soared in popularity. I just know that it has, and that I have a link to it.

The Whole Ed Catalog Swicki

I love these new Swicki search engines, but Squidoo's ill-advised war on inline frames prevents me from displaying it here.

Swickis are easy to create. The downside to these customizable searches is that it takes a lot of work to get them to work the way you want them to, or you could add this one to your blog

I've never quite been sure what distinguishes a blog from a regular webpage. Timeliness seems to have something to do with it, but that doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule.

Anyway, here are some of the things I've been working on lately...
