The actual source of the word is uncertain, however, it is thought Hot Rod may be a contraction of the word "Hot Roadster" meaning a roadster modified to go fast. The term first appeared in the 1930's with teenagers living in Southern California who raced their modified cars on the open dry lake beds located northeast of Los Angeles.

During and after World War II, Hot Rods continued their popularity with returning soldiers, trained in machining and mechanical repair, and engineering. Extensive modifications were made to reduce weight, improve handling and increase speed. The cars and trucks of choice were old Fords such as the Model T, Model A, Model B, and the Ford V-8.

According to the folks at SEMA, A Hot Rod is a pre-1949 automobile which has been modified in ways to use modern components. The body is painted and the interior would be fully finished. An abundance of chrome parts and big tires, is the norm.
