House Train Puppies

As much as we love keeping our four legged friends indoors, this is just not what
they were designed for. They view the whole world as one giant bathroom - and your carpet and expensive sofa are no exception.

Before you sell your dog 3 days after you got it (I actually know people who have done this), consider these House Train Puppies tips to help teach your pet when and where he should relieve himself:

1.) When Housetraining, it is a good idea to keep your puppy confined to one room in the house by using a baby gate until he is completely trained. Preferably, this room will be one that has a tile, linoleum, or other water proof floor. Covering the floor with newspaper will make it much easier to clean up the messes. Try not to close the door - using a baby gate will reduce your puppy's sense of isolation and confinement.

2.) If your puppy does have an accident, be sure to clean that area well and use air freshener to mask the scent. Doing this will reduce the likelihood that your puppy will want to go potty in the same place again. Dogs tend to relieve themselves in the same places over and over so this is especially important to keep your dog from turning the site of the accident into his new "potty spot".

3.)Don't avoid the site of the accident. After it has been thoroughly cleaned and dried, be sure to reintroduce your puppy to this spot. Put a treat there, play with him there, try to get him to lay down there. When Housetraining, remember that your dog is much less likely to go potty where he plays, eats, and sleeps. Make as many areas as possible his living area so that they won't become his bathroom area.



4.) Don't leave your puppy unattended in places where you don't want him to eliminate. If you have to go somewhere, even if only for a few minutes, be sure in place him in a place where it is safe for him to potty if he needs to like mentioned is tip #1. But be sure to let him roam the house when you are able to keep a close eye on him and can look for signals that he's about to go.

5.) Remember that your puppy is much like a baby. You can't punish him for something that is natural to a dog. He doesn't know any better. Training, instead of punishment, is necessary for your dog to learn puppy potty training. Being harsh with your instead of corrective can actually have a reverse effect and could end up sabotaging your efforts.

***When you're not at home or can't supervise your puppy, you must be sure the puppy can't make a mistake. Confine your puppy to a small area that has been thoroughly puppy proofed. Make sure your puppy has unrestricted access to the established toilet area

***When you're home, physically take the puppy to the toilet area every 45 minutes. Extend the time between potty trips gradually, as your puppy exhibits an ability to control his urges.

***Always provide a toilet area that doesn't resemble normal floor coverings in your home. Training your puppy to go on concrete, blacktop, grass or dirt is a good idea.

***Reward your puppy every time he eliminates in the established toilet area. You want him to associate relieving himself in the established areas with good things, like treats, toys and praise. A little play time makes a good reward, and will reinforce the early bonding between you and your puppy.

***Keep a set schedule when feeding your puppy, so that your puppy's need to relieve himself becomes consistent. Provide constant access to fresh, clean drinking water.

***Keeping your puppy in a crate can help your puppy develop self control. Dogs don't like to soil their immediate living area, and will naturally try to control their need to go.

***It's important to be patient when house training your puppy. The process of house training could take several months, but it's much easier to house train right the first time than to retrain a problem dog.

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting event for any family, but the transition will be easier for your new addition if you've taken the time to prepare for his arrival. That means you'll need to buy the right dog supplies ahead of time, including dogs beds, and be ready to deal with something called puppy separation anxiety.

One of the most important are dogs beds, particularly chewproof dog beds. Your puppy needs a special place of his own where he can relax. However, when he gets bored or starts teething, it won't be difficult for him to destroy ordinary dog beds. That's why you should invest in chewproof dog beds. Some of them are even designed to be used inside of crates - handy!



Now you may say you don't need to look at dog beds because the puppy is going to be sleeping with you, but that may not be the best habit to get into. A small puppy may make a cuddly bedmate, but a full grown dog is not always so easy to share a bed with! Chewproof dog beds really are a better option.

Puppy Separation Anxiety.

Dogs are social animals. They want to be part of a pack ,and once you bring them into your home your family becomes that pack. So imagine how hard it can be on your dog when the entire pack abandons him for hours every day. He doesn't understand the concept of work or school - he just knows everyone he cares about in the world has left him. As a result, he probably feels anxious, frustrated, and stressed. Those emotions can lead to negative behaviors, including excessive barking and whining, destructive chewing, and even bathroom accidents.



The best way to determine if your dog is suffering from separation anxiety is to pay attention to his behavior before you leave and when you come home. Dogs who act extremely agitated or excited when you're getting ready to go may be showing signs of this problem. Even though we don't realize it, we follow certain behaviors when we're getting ready to leave. Our dogs know those behaviors and recognize what they mean. Another sign of a problem is a dog who greets you as if you've just returned from a 20 year voyage! An overly enthusiastic greeting as soon as you open the door is another potential indicator of this problematic behavior.

Of course, you'll need other dog supplies as well. These dog supplies include a collar and a leash (preferably adjustable so it will grow with your puppy), food bowls, and chew toys. Additional important dog supplies include a crate and a high-quality dog food designed for puppies.

Remember that if you've brought home a large breed puppy (i.e. a Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Mastiff, etc.) you need to purchase puppy food specifically designed for large breeds since it minimizes the risks of joint and hip problems later. Keep in mind that the dog supplies you buy now will mostly have to be replaced in a few months so don't spend more than necessary. You can always buy more expensive dog supplies when your puppy gets closer to being full grown.
