American Hovawart Dogs
Meet Dutch. Dutch is a rare breed of dog called The Hovawart. Dutch is the decedent of a long line of dogs bred for the purpose of guarding estates.
Thanks to my friends of White Horse Farm, my introduction to the breed was one of awe and wonder.
This site was created to provide information, Links, Videos, and more about the Hovawart Dogs and 2010 American Hovawart National Dog Show.
A Little Hovawart History
Dogs Of Distinction

According to WikiFido, the Hovwart breed originated in the Black Forest region of Germany, and was first described in text and paintings in medieval times. They were bred and owned by Barons who used the dog to guard their flocks, castles, and farms.
Due to wars, conflicts, and politics, the breed was almost totally wiped off the face of the earth. After World War I the Hovawart was reintroduced as a Hovawart-type dog bred by a doctor of zoology who did his best to recreate the breed as close to the original as possible. Unfortunately, the advent of World War II put an end to breeding and most of the dogs were lost or killed. In 1947, what few enthusiasts remained were the first to create the German Hovawart Club.
It was not until 1980 that the dog was recognized in the United Kingdom. In 1982 the Hovarwart was established as a recognized breed by the Kennel Club of Great Britain. The breed is still not recognized by the American Kennel Club.
The Hovawart was not bred to be violent or aggressive, but to serve as a protective family dog. The Hovawart is known for its intelligence, memory, loyalty and agility.
Dutch, the American Hovawart mascot of this page, is a fine example of this noble breed. Dutch belongs to Cynthia McWilliams-Oliver, and serves as the guardian of White Horse Farm.

- Hello, I just discovered you doing a search for dog shows...I'm trying to compile a page with shows by State, it appears that this one is in Ohio, so I started to add it there, perhaps I'm wrong and you would like to come add this lens to the appropriate State? The site (lens) is http://www.squidoo.com/dog-shows-across-america Nice page by the way!

- I am about 99.9% sure I have a Hovawart. Waiting for DNA test to come back and hope they have a Hovawart base from which to draw, seeing as how it is not so prevalent in USA. Love this site. Thank you.
