What Is Self Esteem?
What kind of partner are we
What kind of a friend are we
How well do we do our jobs, and is our work meaningful and worthwhile?
How attractive are we, or how attractive do we think we are?
How do we feel others perceive us?
The extent to which we feel good about ourselves determines our self esteem; if we have good self esteem, you have a high level of self worth and will feel confident, happy, and are more likely to be sucessful in all areas of your life.
In contrast, if our self esteem is low, we can feel that we are worthless as a person, and do not deserve success.
Self esteem is crucially important because it affects every area of our lives; how you think, act, work, relate to others and can have an impact on our ability to experience success. It is thought that self esteem is the main area to work on if we are at all serious about improving ourselves. Once we have a higher level of self esteem, success in all areas of our lives tends to flow more easily.

How Do I Build My Self Esteem?
Improve Your Self Esteem Now
You may be thinking; knowing this is all well and good, but how do I build my self esteem? Here are some of the most effective ways of boosting self esteem and self worth;Halt destructive thoughts. Remember, you have rights, opinions and ideas which are just as valid as everybody else's.
Come to terms with the past- many people suffer from low self esteem as the result of negative experiences in their lives or childhood; therapy is the most obvious solution and can be greatly beneficial, but not everybody will wish to access this. Others will benefit from joining a support group, or an online group. If you have friends you can trust, you could tell them and ask for their support.
Try keeping a 'Feelings Journal'; write down how you feel or how you feel certain events in your life have affected you.
Use self- talk; this can be a really effective way of raising self esteem. Think of the things you did well during the day, and praise yourself for them. Be specific, ie 'I helped my friend solve her problem quickly and easily' rather than 'I was a good friend'.
Focus on your achievements rather than your failures. Everybody fails sometimes, you are not alone. If you find yourself dwelling too much on your failures, start to think of them as learning experiences and think of a lesson you can take from each one.
Write a list of all your good qualities and all the good thing you have in your life right now. Don't be shy! Keep adding to it, and place it somewhere you can see it often.
Set yourself small, easily achievable goals; ie to complete a small task that's been bugging you and you haven't got around to. Reward yourself when you have achieved this goal, and then set another, slightly more challenging goal.
Learn a new skill- this can be really beneficial for low self esteem. Scan the night class brochures from your local college, and pick something which takes your fancy, or something you've wanted to learn for some time.
Look after your physical health; eat well, get enough sleep and rest, and take regular exercise. You will feel so much better, which will boost your self esteem sky high. Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes five times a week.

How To Say 'No'
If somebody asks you to do a favor which would inconvenience you, or to a function you don't really want to attend, here is the most effective way of dealing with it; smile, keep calm, and say "I'm sorry, I can't attend the party as I'm already busy that night", or "I'm sorry but I can't baby-sit tonight as I have a friend coming round, but I can help out at the weekend." Don't say "I'll try" or "I think I might be busy" as this gives scope for them to try to talk you round. Be assertive- this will become easier with practice!
For many people this problem stems from a fear that if you don't automatically jump when people ask, then they won't like you. Try to remember that this isn't the case- your true friends will like you for YOU, not what you do for them!
Above all, remember that your needs and time are as equally important as everybody else's.
