How Much do we Make for eBay Sales on Squidoo? My eBay Commission Earnings Report: How much I've been paid

Ranked #161 in Squidoo Community, #24,781 overall

What are we paid for eBay sales made from our Squidoo eBay module?

How much do we earn in eBay commissions when we sell an eBay item from our Squidoo Lens? I've wondered this question for quite a while, so I decided to do some digging, tally up some numbers from my own stats, and present them here, both for my own record keeping purposes, but also to help others who are wondering the same thing.

QUESTION: How much do we make from eBay sales on Squidoo?
ANSWER: It varies

And to make matters worse for those wanted to know this information - you won't know until you actually receive it! HOWEVER, by looking at your past sales (or looking at mine if you are new to Squidoo), you can get an estimate of what you might receive in the future.

How to Make Money on eBay without selling anything

I am currently making money on eBay without selling anything by writing Squidoo pages (called lenses) about specific items selling on eBay. I recommend eBay items for sale on my Squidoo pages (items that other people are selling). If someone clicks on one of my eBay links, then goes over to eBay and purchases an item, Squidoo will pay me a commission for that eBay sale. Squidoo is a member of the eBay Partner Network and earns commissions from eBay sales then splits them with writers like me.

Why does my eBay commission vary?

How eBay commissions on Squidoo are figured

Ebay pays Squidoo, who is a member of the eBay partner network, based on the new commission formula called Quality Click Pricing. Basically, from what I understand about the commission structure, is that publishers (in this case, Squidoo), who provide higher quality clicks are paid a higher commission.

Think of it like this: We want to send eBay "buyers" instead of just "window shoppers".

This will result in a higher commission paid to Squidoo for eBay sales. When a person clicks on an eBay link, then purchases an eBay item that same day, that publisher (Squidoo) is paid a higher amount. The further out the purchase is from the original click, the lower the amount of commission. For example, if the person clicks a link leading them to a kids toy, but then 7 days later they buy a pair of rainboots, the original click on the toy product probably didn't have much influence on the purchase of the raincoat, so eBay will pay the website a lower commission. The eBay "cookie" only lasts for 7 days, so any purchases made after 7 days from the time of clicking on the link, will no longer create a commission.

To make a long story short, the commissions vary because the commission structure is complicated and based on QUALITY of clicks sent to eBay. The closer the purchase is to when the initial click occurred, the higher the commission paid. This quality click figure is calculated by eBay and used to determine how much commission to pay Squidoo for ebay sales. We would all be paid more by Squidoo if all the buyers clicked a link, then made a purchase that same day!

The Quality Click Pricing algorythmn is what used by eBay to determine how much they are going to pay Squidoo for all the ebay sales. Then, Squidoo takes that money, uses 5% for charity, 45% to cover its costs, then gives the lensmasters the remaining 50% of the commissions, based upon the ebay sales and purchase amounts of each individual lens.

The percentage paid out to the individual lens is determined by how that particular lens contributed to all of the Squidoo ebay sales. From SquidooKimberly, a Squidoo Community Organizer: "We take that pot and distribute a percentage to the lenses that contributed to it, based on how much each lens contributed".

I don't know if "how much each lens contributed" means how much in sales volume or the number of sales or the number of clicks or a combination of all of them. What I do know is that you only earn eBay royalties in months that you actually sell an eBay item. This is different than if you were a stand alone member of the eBay Partner Network. They pay a rate based on clicks and even if you have a day with NO sales, you can still earn money based on your clicks, simply because you have a history of sales.

eBay also pays out a bonus for signing up a new eBay member. You might see this on your dashboard here on Squidoo as a "Signup Bonus". However, Squidoo only pays out the sign up bonus to Giant Squids. If you are not a giant, then your "signup bonus" is put into the pot that gets paid out to all eBay earners. And you get it as part of the pot that is distributed "to the lenses that contributed to it, based on how much each lens contributed".

What eBay Partner Network says about eBay Commissions

"In particular, we look for purchases that happen as a direct result of the publisher's marketing efforts. Therefore, the Quality Click Pricing algorithm places more weight on Buy It Now sales driven in the first few days after the click than sales that come towards the end of the 7 day cookie period, although we take into account the fact that auctions can take up to 7 days to end."

How to Increase your eBay Commissions on Squidoo

By Increasing the Total Commission % PAID to Squidoo for all ebay sales

Besides the logical solution of just selling more ebay items in order to earn more eBay commissions, you can also earn a higher commission percentage on each of your sales by increasing the amount of commission % PAID out to Squidoo. How can you do this?
  • 1Overcome Buying Objections right on your Squidoo page
Remember, we want to send eBay "Buyers" not "Window Shoppers". We want our clicks to eBay immediately convert into a sale. We can do this by overcoming any objections about the ebay product we are trying to sell prior to the reader clicking on the link to purchase the item on eBay. We want to send the shoppers to eBay who are ready to buy right then.

Unlike Amazon, who offers a entire page full of reviews and ratings on each and every product sold on Amazon, eBay buyers must already be convinced of the item they want to buy. If not, they aren't going to get any more information (like customer review ratings). If they aren't already convinced they want to buy a Shark Steam Mop, then they probably will click over to eBay and start looking around and second guess whether they really want to buy that model, and ultimately end up buying nothing. So we want our readers to be convinced and READY TO BUY before we send them over to eBay. How can we do this? Add some customer reviews and product specifications on your Squidoo page, convincing them of their purchase decision prior to making the click over to eBay. This will result in more buyers in a shorter timeframe after the initial click (which equals higher commissions) and less window shoppers (which lowers commission %).

My personal opinion: I think for items that buyers typically want to see a lot of reviews, ratings, and comparisons of models (like electronics, laptops, ebook readers, appliances), then I think Amazon is a better website for sales because of all the product market research they provide like customer reviews, ratings, and even video reviews. However, for items that are one of a kind, collectibles, hobby items, rare, or items that are very expensive new and can be purchased for a lot less as used, eBay is the best marketplace. They buyers tend to know exactly what they want and are just looking for the best price or simply looking for a rare used item that's very specific, and are looking for that one seller on eBay who has it.
  • 2Offer eBay items that end sooner or offer only "Buy It Now" items:
Since the timeframe of when the buyer purchases their eBay item affect the amount of the commission, you may want to consider shortening the end date of the items you offer for sale.

When you set up the eBay module, here are your choices for what items to show:
-- Show items ending at any time (default)
-- Items ending in the next 6 hours
    -- Items ending today
    -- Items ending tomorrow
-- Items ending the day after tomorrow

By choosing to show only items ending today, your shopper is more likely to purchase one of those items. This should be paid a higher commission based on the Quality Click Pricing structure. However, keep in mind that this will limit the number of items being shown in that module. If you are selling something with a broad keyword, like "baby jogging strollers", then there should be plenty of items to fill the 5 spots on the module. However, if you are selling something really specific, such as "1947 wedding photos", there may only be a few items listed on eBay and they may end next week. By limiting your auctions to items that end in the next 6 hours or only today, your eBay module may not shown any items at all. Please test out the time frame first to make sure enough items are showing up for sale.

This begs the question to the powers at Squidoo: Why is the default option "Items ending at any time", since this probably results in the lowest commission rate. Why not make the default option "Items ending in the next 6 hours"? For those that don't bother to change the auction ending time for their listings, or just don't know why they should, there seems to be a lot of money left on the table by having the default set to "Items ending at any time".

Increase Squidoo eBay commissions by sending "Buyers" not "Window Shoppers"

The time between click and purchase is an important element of the Quality Click Pricing system

eBay Commission Experiment

eBay commission on Squidoo

You might want to run a little experiment with your lenses to see if you can raise your eBay commissions. You can do this simply by making one of your lenses only list auction style listings that end anytime, another lens that only lists eBay listings ending in the next 6 hours, and another lens that only lists eBay BUY IT NOW items. Compare the stats from all three to see if you are paid a higher commission for BUY IT NOW purchases. If anyone does this, please leave a comment below and let us know how it worked out for you!
  • Lens A: Only sell eBay "Items ending in the next 6 hours"
  • Lens B: Only sell eBay "Items ending today"
  • Lens C: Only sell eBay "Items ending tomorrow"
  • Lens D: Only sell eBay "Items ending the day after tomorrow"
  • Lens E : Only sell eBay "Auction items ending any time" (this is the Default Choice)

Paypal Payment Received from Squidoo on August 11, 2011

These are eBay commissions I actually received, after Squidoo took their 50% share. This is MY SHARE, paid to my Paypal Account, as part of my monthly earnings from Squidoo. I also earned money from the ad pool, infolinks, chitika ads, and Amazon Sales (but none of these figures are included here - this is ONLY eBay sales). I am encouraged that my eBay sales are growing. Last month I only had 4 different lenses with eBay sales, but this month I've increased that to include ebay sales from 7 different Squidoo lenses. I also increased the number of ebay items sold from 9 ebay sales in May to 43 eBay sales in June.

I'm happy with my July eBay commissions, as my sales were more evenly spread out across more Squidoo lenses this month. I had ebay sales on 14 different Squidoo lenses, up from only 7 lenses in June. I sold more eBay items than I did in June, however my total sales amount was down. This is due to a big $999 purchase that was included in the June numbers. However, my commission percentage was up, so my total commission dollar amount earned was about the same as in June.

I'm looking forward to seeing the August numbers when we get paid next month, as I sold about 127 ebay items, and the total dollar amount of eBay sales was quite a bit higher too. If I can average 3.5% ebay commissions again, I should make about $100 more than I did in July. I'll have to wait and see on our next Squidoo paycheck on October 15th.

Questions? Comments? Please leave me a note at the bottom of this page. Thanks~

A few purchases made from the Lens were in a category that I did not want to go look at what they bought and the purchase prices of 2 of the 5 items purchased on that lens. Therefore I could not calculate the commission percentage without knowing the total sales prices from the Lens. So I did NOT include the $4.27 in commissions in the calculations for total ebay sales at the bottom of the table, nor did I include that lens in calculating the ebay commission percentage.

However, I've included it below in the totals below for the number of eBay sales and the eBay commissions I received, which was $190.35 across all my lenses.

My Thoughts on my August eBay Commissions

I'm loving the increase in eBay sales

Squidoo Ebay Commissions ReportI'm pretty happy with my August eBay commissions. My number of eBay sales nearly doubled from last month. This increase in the NUMBER of eBay sales is more significant to me than the increase in the overall sales amount, which increased a lot too.

That's because I had one large eBay sale for $1475 on my Antique License Plate lens. The ebay item purchased was a 1932 Ford Grille Original Henry Hot Rod Patina, which is right in line with the antique license plates featured on my page, however this item wasn't actually listed on my page. That shows you the power of the 7 day window you have from when someone clicks a link on your page.

You can earn commissions on anything they buy on eBay over the next 7 days (as long as they didn't click somebody else's link on another Squidoo page). The buyer may or may not have purchased an antique license plate from my page, I don't know. But I do know he followed one of my links and ended up buying this old antique 1932 Ford grille.

It's nice to get a surprise sale of a $1475 item on a page that only averages sales of $21.

If I excluded that one big ticket item purchase, my ebay sales would have been around $3900, which is still an increase over my July sales.

The number of lenses that had eBay sales on them also increased. I had 5 more lens than I did in July with at least one eBay sale this month. At least a few were Squidoo lenses that I had created in July, then went on to get some eBay sales in August, like my Vintage Candy Machine page, which I created 7/6/11. It had one sale on 7/31/11, then 5 sales in August, and then 17 sales in September. It's nice to see it picking up some sales so early in its lifespan.

September 2011 Squidoo eBay Commissions

Paid on November 15, 2011

September 2011 eBay Commission Report

Here's what I earned from eBay sales only during the month of September. Note the last lens that is highlighted in yellow. I had one huge sale that was worth $8300, but I only earned a $40.07 commission on it. This was way out of the ordinary, both from the standpoint of the size of the item purchased, and the low commission percentage. So I tallied the average commission percentage excluding this big sale. I had 188 other eBay items that sold which I earned an average commission of 4.81%. This is more in line with what I have been earning. So I chose to exclude the $8300 sale from my total. I don't know why it earned such a low commission. And it was the only sale on that lens, so I don't have anything else to compare it to (whether all sales on that lens would earn that low of a commission or not).

Very clear and straightforward. Do you have an ebay module on every lens or just select lenses? Thanks for sharing your tips here.

It depends on the topic of my lens. I have eBay links on lenses where the item is a used item commonly bought and sold on eBay, for example, collectibles and antiques. Then I have lenses that are about new things like a toy where most people would rather buy from a retailer like Amazon. So basically it just depends on what you are writing about. But even informational lenses can have links, for example my lens about taking my kids to the Phoenix Children's Museum has links to Amazon showing similar items that we played with in the museum (like a ball maze).

Unlike the Amazon commissions, which are reported individually in your Earnings Tab, the eBay commissions will be shown in one lump sum on each Lens for all the ebay sales you made in that particular month from that Lens. This will NOT appear on your earnings tab until a few days before payday (60 days later). So this ebay commission of $12.44 showed up in my earnings tab right before receiving Squidoo earnings for May were paid out on July 13th, 2011.

Please Share your Ebay earnings %

eBay commission on Squidoo

If you went ahead and figured out your eBay commission %, please consider sharing your commission % here. You can share the % you made from one lens, or an average amount like I did! If you are a REALLY successful Squidoo writer and you have hundreds of eBay sales per month, then you probably don't look up every single eBay sale to see how much it sold for. But if you do, please share what you know! Thanks!

Look up each eBay item sold on your Lens for the month, click the auction id number to see the ending sale price.
Total up all the eBay sales from the month.
Your commission received (on Royalties tab) divided by total sale amounts (add together each sale price) = your ebay commission %

Example
From the pictures above I received $12.44 in commissions / $214.77 total in sales from the 3 items purchased = .0579 which is 5.7%

Total commissions paid ($12.44)
-------------------------------------------- = .0579 or 5.79%
Total ebay sales ($214.77)

Question and Answer

Question: How are you increasing your eBay sales each month?

Answer: I am creating new Squidoo Lenses using Jaaxy Keywords to pick new topics that have good traffic levels and low competition.

In July, $61.20 out of my total $96.19 ebay commissions came from NEW lenses I created in June or July 2011.

You CAN earn commissions right away from NEW lenses if you pick the right topics!

Great lens but I have one question for you. What did The person buy on eBay for over $8000 through your lens.
  • vallain Apr 15, 2012 @ 2:26 am | delete
This is inspiring. I've started noticing the eBay sales more on my lenses and realizing that I wasn't going after this market as much as I should. Your explanation is marvelous and I'm off to put more eBay modules in.

Thanks for the great explanation of ebay selling on Squidoo. So far I've only tried Amazon. I think some of my lenses would use some ebay modules.
  • klaird Feb 1, 2012 @ 9:30 pm | delete
eBay works well for products that are used like collectibles or antiques and also for handmade items. Also it's great for expensive items that people want to buy slightly used so they don't have to pay so much for the new item on Amazon. Look through the ebay trends on their homepage and see what's selling right now on eBay for some more ideas.

I have one lens that does some decent e-bay business. I need to look at it more closely to see if I can fine tune it. This has been really interesting and helpful
  • Greekgeek Nov 24, 2011 @ 10:43 pm | delete
I need to get more systematic with eBay. I've got a niche account with some eBay sales, but I'm so busy with Amazon I haven't really been tracking them.

Thanks for the feature. I'll feature yours in return, since you cover something I really don't at all...I'm a noob when it comes to eBay sales!
  • aesta1 Nov 22, 2011 @ 8:31 pm | delete
I have 0% in ebay and I am here over a year. I should have read this lens before. Thanks for being generous in sharing all these.
  • klaird Nov 22, 2011 @ 8:41 pm | delete
Some topics generally lend themselves better to eBay sales because the items are generally sold on eBay, like collectibles and antiques, which I write a lot about. Also higher priced used items sell a lot on eBay too. So it just depends what your lenses are about. Good Luck!

It really helps to see REAL numbers, not just generalities. Thank you.
  • klaird Oct 23, 2011 @ 11:43 am | delete
You are very welcome! That was my thoughts exactly when I decided to make this page. As as you can see from my numbers, every lens earns a different percentage and that varies every month. But the last couple months have averaged about 3.5% ebay commissions for me.
  • ramfir Oct 22, 2011 @ 3:04 am | delete

You are very welcome. I know everyone will have a little bit different commissions from eBay sales, as you can see how mine vary from Lens to Lens. But at least you can get some sort of idea as to how much they might be, as well as what goes into determining how much eBay actually pays Squidoo. Good Luck!

Great information! I appreciate your useful tips and I found it very helpful that you posted your actual earnings. Congrats on your increased sales too! I was thinking about adding an eBay module to one of my lenses but I had no idea that there was a formula for Quality Click Pricing. Guess I'll take your advice and experiment. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so very much for this information, I am just getting interested parties clicking on my eBay items and I really wasn't sure how this all works. Take good care, Rose
  • klaird Sep 8, 2011 @ 8:48 am | delete
You are welcome Rose. I wasn't sure either until I really started researching it and then looking at my own commissions. I love analyzing numbers so figuring out the actual commission rate every month is fun for me! As you can see from my numbers, the commissions can vary a lot based on the QUALITY of clicks you send eBay from each individual lens. I'll be posting my July commissions (paid in Sept), as soon as Squidoo payday comes, hopefully within the next week (always before the 15th).
  • thesuccess Jul 15, 2011 @ 4:22 am | delete
A few months ago I had a rush of eBay sales, since then none at all!
  • klaird Sep 4, 2011 @ 11:25 am | delete
I had a lens with a bunch in June, then none in July, then a bunch again in August. I'm really not sure why, because my traffic numbers were the same for both June and July. Although sometimes I think I'll get one eBay buyer that will click one of my links, then go on to order a lot of products before that 7 day eBay cookie expires, resulting in many sales for me, even though it was just one visitor! I LIKE that kind of traffic!

How Much you Make from eBay Sales

I used to sell random items on eBay and I made a little bit of money, but nothing significant enough to pay any bills. And I felt like I was really tied to the business. I had to always check on my listings, making sure to ship out items as soon as I sold them.

I've made much more money by recommending other people's eBay items here on my Squidoo pages & earning affiliate commissions with Squidoo's eBay Partner Network affiliate relationship. This payday I earned $722.86 from ebay sales.
