The Mentalist - Patrick Jane (Simon Baker)
Patrick Jane is an independant consultant working for/with the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation), who uses his previous skills as a "psychic medium" to help solve cases. Although he does assist with solving a great deal of cases, his motivation is to try and catch the serial killer Red John, who murdered his wife and daughter.

Mind control is an extremely powerful ability to have and has been displayed in several episodes of the Mentalist.By carefully placing subtle (but deliberate) trigger words, Patrick Jane has managed to reveal the killer on more than one occasion.
This is not an easy ability to learn, and only those with skill and intelligence will be able to master the art of becoming a hypnotist. In the right hands hypnotism can be used to help a great deal of people. For example, it can help people overcome fears or phobias, addictions, weight loss, reducing pain and empowering people with confidence.
However, in the wrong hands this power can be used to manipulate or take advantage of people - such as the thief who hypnotised a cashier and stole money from her till.
This is an incredibly powerful ability to learn - so please use in the appropriate manner.

The hypnosis course that is linked to this site is extremely comprehensive, but it's not easy... I've been studying various books, courses and websites to try and learn the art of hypnosis - but it's definitely a case of practice, practice, practice and it's not something that can be picked up overnight (I'm afraid to say).
I recommended the course linked to this site as it's what I started to learn from (and covers a vast array of hypnotic material) - but I believe that you can search on Amazon and find hypnosis books for all levels of experience.
I think that I will add another module from Amazon dedicated just to hypnosis books - I hope that this helps answer your question. Hi again - I just tried to add another module specifically for hypnosis books, but Squidoo blocked it and advised it was spam content!! I'm really sorry...
If you search on Amazon, there are several books that cover the basics of hypnosis, around $25 - so this will give you an idea if you wish to take the subject any further, then you can move onto more advanced techniques.

With regards to your question, I think that there is so much we do not understand about the human brain, that I would be quite naive to dismiss ESP as being real. I do believe that there are some people who have a genuine ability - but I also realise that there are some people who pretend that they have the ability to manipulate and take advantage of unsuspecting individuals.
I would be really interested to learn what you have discovered in your research... I love watching this show, so it is great their is a lens about it. Great job. I enjoy the Mentalist, Darren Brown a the few others that do this work. Because there are so few, I tend to believe that it is something terribly difficult and requires many years of training oneself. Hi Mark,
You would be quite suprised how quickly you can pick up tips and techniques about reading people. Whilst I cannot claim to be as good as Derren Brown - I can read body language quite easily now.
It's especially useful if you apply the use of body language when attending meetings or interviews. You can suss out who is going to be most difficult to win over or people who share the same beliefs/interests and who will be an ally to you.

In answer to your question - yes I have used some of the techniques detailed in my lens. I am quite good at reading people and I'm especially adept at spotting when someone is spinning me a line... it's quite interesting.
