How To Catch Largemouth Bass - What You Need - Never Be Without The Tools Of The Trade

Before you even think about how to catch a largemouth bass, you need to ensure you have the proper equipment. Don't worry nothing too expensive, but you need to have the right tools. However before you even think about going fishing you need to ensure that you have a fishing licence. The majority of states will allow you to fish if you are under the age of 14 or over 70 without a fishing licence. But if you are going to fish on private property you must make sure that you have a fishing licence. You can easily pick one up any large sporting goods store and they will cost in the region of $5-$50.

The piece of equipment that is your most important tool is your rod and reel. You want these to be in absolute fantastic shape so they are as effective as possible. You may choose to buy your rod and reel separately or you can go the route I did. I just purchased a kit which included the rod and reel, a tackle box and a variety of different fishing equipment. In order to catch largemouth bass it is recommended that you purchase an already assembled rod and reel. They will usually already come with the fishing line attached to the reel. You will find that many roads are very expensive, although you you can still grab yourself a bargain in the $20-$30 range. Honestly, I believe the cheaper equipment is more than good enough to get the job done.

You have a wide variety of rods and reels to choose from. It is usually best to stick with a medium action rod of about 5-6 foot long. An open-faced reel is usually better than a close-faced one as they seem to get tangled a lot less and you have far more control in casting. However, this is totally your decision. If you can, try and get a pole that splits into two pieces as this is far easier to carry and transport around.

Next you need to look through the different kinds of hooks that are required to catch largemouth bass. The size 2 and size 4 snelled hooks seem to be the best kind. They often come with approximately 6 inches of line already attached to them and they also have a small loop on the top. This makes it extremely easy to quickly tie onto your line. I would also recommend you get size 2 rubber worm hooks.

You will also need floats or bobbers which are fantastic when fishing with different types of live bait. They have two main advantages - Firstly you're able to suspend your live bait at different levels beneath the water surface e.g. nightcrawlers. Secondly you will know immediately when a fish has taken the bait. To ensure you can see them through the murky waters I would recommend that you get the yellow and orange fluorescent round floats. You can actually purchase them in packs that come in a whole batch of different sizes.

You should also have swivels which are the brass attachments you tie to the end of your line. You can switch your lures on and off quickly due to the clasp that they have at the end. This is great as it doesn't require you to cut and tie your line every time you want to switch lures. They cost less than a dollar and usually come in packs of 12. They are great time-saving tool and come in a variety of colours, but it's probably best to get the shiny ones as they are more likely to attract largemouth bass.

Next is your sinkers which you will use to weigh down your line to ensure that they swim at different levels below the water surface. When fishing for largemouth bass it is easier to get the smaller split-shot sinkers. You can attach your line a couple of inches above your rubber worm so that it goes deeper into the water as you reel it in. This is extremely advantageous when the largemouth bass go deeper in the water.

Finally once you have all your equipment together in one place you need somewhere to store it. I recommend a tackle box. You have numerous sizes to choose from, some have as little as one shelf while others have as many as 10. This is a personal choice that only you can make. As long as you have a simple toolbox with two shelves, that is more than enough to hold everything that you will need to catch largemouth bass.

How To Catch Largemouth Bass - Baits

There are a number of different baits you can choose from and here are some of the most important.

The easiest kind of bait to catch largemouth bass with is live bait. Simply put, its real! I will admit that any fish can be fooled into believing that a plastic bait is real as long as they look real. If you're looking to use live bait to catch largemouth bass, I would suggest that you choose nightcrawlers or minnows. There are many other kinds of live bait, however these two have proved to be the most popular

There are once again numerous types of plastic baits. However to catch a largemouth bass you may be better off with rubber worms, frogs, lizards and leeches. Largemouth bass absolutely love rubber worms and there are actually hundreds of different kinds choose from. Try and get hold of the brightly coloured worms that are approximately 5 to 6 inches long. You may find that the worms already have hooks in.

You may choose to use a spinner bait which is a combination of hook, plastic spoon, jighead and tassles made of plastic. They actually resemble a small fish or insects to the largemouth bass and believe me they absolutely love them. The largemouth bass are driven to distraction when the spinner bait move through the water. The metal spoon spins and actually creates a noise underwater which will drive the bass crazy.

You may want to try fishing spoons to catch largemouth bass. They resemble a shiny spoon and have three hooks attached to each end. They are considered excellent for catching largemouth bass due to their shiny appearance and the way they they move through the water. There she resemble a distressed minnow when you fish with them correctly. They come in a variety of colours and sizes.

How To Catch Largemouth Bass - Where To Fish

Largemouth bass are a warm water fish and you will generally find them in shallow waters. Only when the weather is cool will they move deeper to find warmer waters. As the temperature rises they will migrate into the shallow waters closer to the shore.

One of the main reasons that largemouth bass fishing is so popular is because you don't actually need a boat to fish for them. Your chances are equally as good when you're on the shoreline or if you're on a boat. Here are some of the places that you should concentrate on:-

You will often find bass close to the shore and a good place to start is where you find overhanging trees that are dipping into the water. Equally as good is if there is a lot of growth next the shoreline and weeds in the water. Obviously you will have to be very careful not to get snagged or your line tangled when you are fishing in those areas. You should try a weedless plastic worm.

I have often found that largemouth bass congregate underneath docs and pylons. If you do come across the remnants of an old dock, try fishing around where the posts and pylons are left underwater.

If you can find areas that are loaded heavily with weeds and lily pads you should be out of find lots of largemouth bass. Try a weedless plastic frog in these circumstances. Jerk your rod lightly when you reel in to make the frog "hop" up and down.

Also keep an eye out for rock beds and stone formations. This is a fantastic place to catch largemouth bass. The largemouth bass often use places such as these to nest and lay eggs. Simply cast your line and reel it in slowly, approximately 6 to 8 inches above the rock bed.
