How to fix an Underexposed Image

Quite simply, the easiest way to avoid underexposed photos is to adjust your aperture settings, your shutter speed and your film speed when shooting.
Sound easy?

For the professional photographer who knows everything and every setting about the tools of their trade it shouldn't be a problem.

For the average amateur, or even the lazy pro ;-), then finding the right settings in the short space of time you have to take your perfect shot... well that can be pretty challenging and that's assuming you've even found all the settings!

So for most people the easiest way to go is to edit their shots using digital photo editing software such as Adobe's Photoshop CS4, Adobe's Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, or the GIMP.

What Is An Underexposed Photo?

You've Heard It Talked About, But What Exactly Is An Underexposed Photograph or Image?

Basically, an underexposed photo is simply a dark photo and, at times, it can be a photographers nightmare.

Underexposure in photography is one of the things you can count on as you become more involved in photography. You can set your camera just so for the environment around you, and still end up with something that is too dark.

Fortunately, it is quite simple to rescue most photographs from the bin by using digital photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Quickly Fixing Underexposed Photos

How to quickly fix a dark and underexposed image

An under exposed photoIf you looked at the picture for the intro you probably noticed it looked pretty dark and underexposed.

Using any photo editing software you can easily fix this problem. Here I am going to show you how to do it using Photoshop and it is a pretty easy fix.

If you do not have Photoshop installed on your computer you can easily go to www.Adobe.com and download a 60 day trial version. It is a great way to become accustomed to the program without a huge initial expense on your part.

After you have loaded your photo in Photoshop, you will first want to create a duplicate of your picture. Select Layer/Duplicate Layer from the menu bar. Now you will want to select Layer/Layer Style/Blending Options. Select "screen" from the Blend Modes drop down menu.

Immediately you should see a lightened picture. Depending on how dark the picture is, your photo may now be exactly as you want it. Improved underexposed photo
