Dachshund puppies are very cute but need to be potty trained ASAP

Bringing a Dachshund puppy home is the beginning of a beautiful bonding experience.
As soon as you bring your new Dachshund puppy home, you begin a journey of happiness and joy. They are funny little dogs that seem to love to make us happy. They love to cuddle and play with their toys and are a pleasure to be around.
However, they can also be stubborn and are very hard to housetrain.
That's why I and many other Dachshund owners feel that you should learn how to potty train a Dachshund puppy - the sooner you start the better for you and your floors.
My first experience Potty training a Dachshund Puppy
"They can be little different"
Dachshunds can be a little stubborn to say the least and I remember having a struggle with my first Dachshund. To be honest at first potty training was hit and miss.
I soon realized that what worked for my past dog (a Golden Retriever) was not working for my little Dachshund. I knew I was missing something - after all Dachshunds are very intelligent and want to please.
One time I remember trying to remain calm while I stood outside in the rain for 20 minutes with my Dachshund puppy waiting for him to "go potty".
He did not go- we both got very stressed and wet. My Dachshund hates the rain - I soon learnt to take and umbrella with me into my garden and put it over my Dachshund!
Crazy as that sounds it worked, you see he was fine as long as the rain was not hitting him. Oh, and yes he promptly peed on the kitchen floor after that first rain date.
Dachshunds are a little 'different' from the average dog that is why in the end I had to learn more about these funny little dogs.
Potty training a Dachshund Puppy can be easy
I found that if I remained calm and accepted that during the training stage, my Dachshunds may have the occasional accident then potty training seemed to be a smoother and more enjoyable experience for both my dogs and me.

Try these tips today:
When you take him outside use a command - I use "Go Potty". Make sure everyone in your household also uses this command with him. Just keep using it even if he seems to be ignoring it.
When he does go where you want him too then praise him like crazy.
Some people like to reward their Dachshund puppy with a treat - This is a personal preference and certainly helps with training. If you want to go this way then there are plenty of health treats in your local pet store. Just remember Dachshund puppies only have a tiny belly so only give him tiny pieces.
Dachshund puppies need to go potty frequently - keep an eye on him and take him outside often.
Do not let your Dachshund puppy wander around the house without someone with him. Firstly, they are so small that there is a higher risk of them hurting themselves but also because he is much more likely to be peeing on your carpet in the other room.
This little Dachshund learnt to ring a bell
What is your Dachshunds signal?
Watch your Dachshund puppy - he may already be letting you know that he needs to go outside. Dachshunds tend to be a little subtle in their signals and instead of scratching or crying at the door, they may just look at it. Mine just swivels his eyes in the direction of the door - I think he thinks we are as intelligent as he is.
The Do's and Don'ts of Dachshund potty training
A Dachshund puppy needs to go potty at regular and frequent intervals so make sure you take him to where he should pee:
As soon as they wake up in the morning
After naps
When they take a break from playing with their toys
After all meals
Before and after being put in their crate
Before you go to bed at night
Most importantly what not to do:
Do not hit your puppy
Do not shout at your puppy - IF you catch him in the act a sharp "NO" is good
Do not rub his nose in it
Negative reinforcement will make your Dachshund puppy scared and start hiding to pee and he will associate punishment with you returning to the house.

You see Dachshunds by nature are stubborn and can be tenacious so housebreaking a new puppy or even an older dog can be very frustrating.
We have had many and loved every one of them. We also volunteer and foster Dachshunds for Dachshund Rescue and have experience housebreaking both old and young. We are regularly asked how we do it.
First, arm yourself with lots of information - some people prefer to read books, go on a course, instantly download an ebook or watch videos - whatever your choice make it sooner rather than later.
