What Is Vibrato And How To Develop It?
A common question when learning to sing is, "What is vibrato and how to develop it?" A definition of vibrato would be some thing like this...the "free oscillation of the vocal cords." This can be the result from an "open throat" or in other words an "open pharynx." Another possible way to get this result is closed vocal cords and open throat. Some thing else to take into consideration is having an even "sub-glottic breath pressure." This involves the lower lumbar, abdominal muscles, upper gludial muscles, pectoral muscles and intercostal muscles.
In this lens, you'll find out what are the common problems in learning how to sing vibrato and how can it be achieved in a rather short span of time.

Common Problems In Learning How To Sing Vibrato
Vocal wobble: In other words wide vibrato. This caused by the lack of correct resistance of breath pressure. Another one is the tone is lacking focus. These problems can cause what is called the " age in the voice." Solution: vocal exercises that focus and body support. A healthy sound is the "ng" which will help the focus development. The hiss that is sustained will help in learning the muscles used in holding back the breath pressure.
The overly fast vibrato: This is just as bad as the wobble. This is just as unhealthy as the wobble. The causes can be there is pressure on the base of the tongue. This can happen at the time of taking a breath or when the start of sound occurs.
The lack of approximation of the vocal cord: This occurs when a singer's vocal cords do not close after taking a breath. If this happens then the vibrato is fast, the speed depends on the size of the vocals cords as well as the shape.
Straight tone: This means there is no vibrato when singing. This can be very damaging to the voice. The result is the formation of vocal nodules caused by there being too much pressure being held on the glottis. This prevents vibrato occurring. Proper acoustical and vowel alignment creates a perfect vocal blend. Most people that have been singing straight tone have a time with learning vibrato because they sang so long with so much pressure that it is difficult to sing otherwise. Vibrato happens when there is proper balance between support muscles and the feeling of the "u" vowel on the pharynx. The "u" vowel permits the correct pressure on the glottis.
Diaphragmatic vibrato: Occurs when there is pulsating in the diaphragm during a sustained note or tone, this creates a false vibrato. This is very difficult to correct because the muscles memorize the feeling but this can be corrected with a lot of work. How to correct this mistake try using a sustained hiss to allow your body to memorize the sensation while doing this. This will help stabilize the diaphragm.
Vocal trill: Sometimes a good place to start learning vibrato is by using a trill. This is a type of yodel in the vocal cords. From there it is a matter of learning to release the over squeezing the vocal cords which in turn allows for the vibrato to develop.
