How to speed up computer? - The first thing that you need to do in order to speed up computer is to free up some disk space. Overtime, your computer will accumulate a lot of unnecessary files. By clearing up these files, your computer's speed can improve quite a bit. Windows itself has an inbuilt software called Disk Cleanup that helps you to clear up and purge those useless hard disk files that accumulate over time.

The most common areas purged by the Disk Cleanup tool are:

- Temporary operating system files
- Temporary internet files
- Temporary program files
- Downloaded program files
- Recycle bin files
- And setup log files

To run the Disk Cleanup tool, click on the "Start" icon at the bottom left of the computer screen and then click on "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", and select "Disk Cleanup".

If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean up. Once you have picked one click OK.

Now, the Disk Cleanup tool will calculate how much disk space it is able to free up. Just wait until it is done. It is recommended that you do not to run any other programs while doing this.

Once it is done, the Disk Cleanup tool will show you which files can be purge to make more room for your hard disk. If there are any files that you DO NOT want to delete, make sure the check box are clear.

Click OK to proceed. This can take some time to complete. Just leave the PC and make sure that there are no other programs running in the background.

Duplicate files are also necessary to clear out. To do this, there is a program called the Duplicate File Finder. It is a simple and convenient program that looks for duplicate files.

This duplicate finder can search the folders on your computer for duplicates; it will also find duplicates in .zip and .rar archives.

Duplicate File Finder has a rich functionality as it can: Find duplicate files the program finds files that have identical contents independent of the file name; Find duplicate mp3 files the program searches for duplicate files by mp3 tags; Find duplicate photos the program finds duplicate image files (for example, two files that have the same picture, but different resolution).

Duplicate File Finder can also find files with similar name or zero size files. You can delete the discovered duplicates, send them to the Recycle Bin or copy them to a separate folder.

How To Speed Up Computer - Defragment your hard drive once a month. Defragmenting your computer's hard drive is like changing your car's oil: It's the one thing you should do regularly, even if you don't do anything else.

Here's how defragmenting works, in a nutshell: Your computer saves files to areas of the hard drive known as clusters. Ideally, a single file will occupy adjacent clusters, enabling your programs to retrieve that file quickly with minimal drive movement. But as you create new files your computer saves them near old ones, and when you modify old ones the new information gets written to more distant clusters, and over time a single file can get fragmented, or scattered over several nonadjacent clusters. Multiply this by the number of modified files on your system, and pretty soon opening and saving files can get pretty slow. Add in fragmented system files that Windows or applications use automatically, and everything else can get pretty slow, too.

To get all the files in order again, you can defragment your hard disk by running the Disk Defragmenter system tool.

To do this click on the "Start" icon at the bottom left of the computer screen and then click on "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", and select "Disk Defragmenter".

(Warning! The Defragment process can take up to 2 to 12 hours and maybe more depending on how fragmented your hard drive is, it is recommended that to do this overnight, and make sure there are no other programs running in the background. Late Sunday night is a great time to defrag your drive.)

If you have more than one hard drive, select the drive you want to defragment and click Defragment. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, don't bother clicking the Analyze button in the Disk Defragmenter dialog box; it may tell you that you do not need to defragment the drive, but if you have not done so within a month or more you should do it anyway.

In fact, defragmenting once a month should be your goal; this is just often enough to prevent excessive fragmentation before it manifests itself in poor performance, and it prevents the defragmenting process from taking too long. Even if you are fastidious about defragmenting once a month, you should set aside an hour or so for the job.

However, the Disk Defragmenter is known to be notoriously laggy and sometimes unresponsive. If this happens to you, I suggest using Advanced Defrag; as it completely defrags and optimizes the system performance much more faster than the one Windows provides.

Some of them, such as Yahoo Messenger, Real-Player's automatic update utility, which place an icon in your Windows System Tray; and others don't.
