"How can I get cheap plane tickets" you ask? It is not that hard! Just use a bit of common sense, add a dash of planning and a sprinkle of research and you can save major bucks! The price of air fares vary greatly for many different reasons. Time of year, fuel prices, flight demand, taxes and many various deals and promotions run by the companies. However getting the best deal out of all this information can be confusing. Here are 8 simple tips to help you in your search for a cheap air fare on your next flight!

1 - Be Flexible

Changing the date of your departure and/or return trip can greatly affect the cost of your ticket in some cases. When researching flight costs if you can afford to be flexible in your dates you can sometimes save up to 50% with a day or two difference! OF course if the cost of accommodation for another day or two then this may not be a good solution it is certainly something to look at!

2 - No Need to Stay Saturday

There is a belief that staying overnight on a Saturday to fly out on Sunday can save you money. While this perhaps may have been true at some point it seems to no longer apply in today's market. Comparisons between ticket price and the days across a number of airlines show no definite or great difference so this myth can be busted. Hopefully this will help with your flexibility!

3 - Book Ahead

Book 3-4 weeks ahead, not just one week or a few days ahead. The closer to the date of the flight the more expensive it can be in nearly every flight from any airline that is just the nature of the beast. Plan early and you can halve the cost or even more of a ticket!

4 - Fly Midweek

While Saturday or Sunday are similar there is a distinct difference between the weekends and weekdays. Since most people travel on weekends the prices are raised for more profit, flights during the week however will be lower to various degrees so if possible plan to fly on Monday to Friday.

5 - Be Flexible on Your Airport

Sometimes choosing a close by airport to your actual destination will save you money. While you have to get transport back to your destination the cost difference between the extra public transport trip and a direct flight can be significant. Obviously this may add time to your trip but if you can afford the time the savings can often be well worth it.

6 - Check Return Trip Fares

Though it sounds just plain wrong sometimes return trips can cost LESS than one way trips! IF you are just going one way check the price for a return fare and you can sometimes find it cheaper! Why this is I do not know but airline promotions and sometimes just plain screw ups in their pricing system can work in your favour!

7 - Avoid Holidays

This is a common sense one, Holidays are the busiest time of year for flights and so the airlines bump up their prices considerably to earn more profit. While avoiding the busiest days is simply good to not get caught in the massive commuter holiday rush and crush it also saves quite a large sum of money. While perhaps not always possible if you can plan your trip out that way you will make savings.

8 - Multi-City Trips

Many airline companies offer deals on trips that have multiple stopovers. Instead of searching for individual fares for each leg of your trip see if you can get an all in one multi-city trip. These can often be cheaper then the individual trips but using all the other tips I have given it is not always so but keep it in mind!
Using these simple common sense methods you can shave hundreds of dollars off your trip which leaves you with more money to enjoy on your holiday or simply more money in the bank. It is not that hard! Just a matter of good timing and organization on your behalf and sometimes a bit of luck and your wallet will thank you!
