How to Bass Fish Basics

Now it's time for the nuts and bolts or "how to's" of Bass Fishing. Whether you have a boat or fishing from shore will make a difference also. Every fisherman has their own ideas but here are some tips if you're fishing from the shore.

FISHING GEAR
1. Light rods are good.
2. Small reels with 4 or 8 pounds
3. Hook size 1 and 2 work well
4. Use ultra light spinning tackle

WHAT TO USE IN THE MORNING
- Use Buzzbait and spinnerbait on top or just below the surface.
- Retrieve pretty fast.
- A plastic worm may also do the job.

WHAT TO USE MIDDAY
- Jig-n-pig rigs close to the shore under fallen trees and bushes
- Fish very slow along the bottom
- Watch the line for movement and set the hook hard.
- Crankbaits and spinnerbaits attract bass from deep water.
- To fish deep use 10-pound line
- Plastic worms, frogs, crawfish, lizards, grubs and fish catch fish too.
- Tube jigs and other odd shaped plastics will catch bass on most days.
- Some days certain colors work best.

LIVE BAIT
Bass will hit on live bait such as shiners and crawfish placed under a bobber with no weight. Place hook in the back of the crawfish. Grubs and night crawlers are also good live baits to use. If you want to catch a large bass offer a large bait. Small baits often catch small pan fish or perch. So to catch the big one think big.

A LITTLE ABOUT TECHNIQUE
Fake soft plastics should be fished slow. When trying a new lure drop close to the shore and the imitations movement look like the real thing.

These few ideas should be enough to get you going. There is so much more to learn about gear, baits and technique but that doesn't mean you can't catch fish now so grab that gear and go.
