Learning To Build Model Train Displays
The first time you build a model train display it's perfectly understandable to be a little nervous about it. You might be concerned that you'll do something horribly wrong and spoil your whole model train layout. Don't worry though; as long as you follow the instructions, it's actually very difficult to get off track (if you'll forgive the pun) with your model train displays.
Decisions to be Made about Model Train Display
- Who will be using or building the trains and displays?
- If its children, the detail can be less specific.
- Adults concerned more with realism and scale.
First Steps for Building the Model Train Display
Realism or Fantasy Design
Depending on who will be using the layout, different approaches can be taken. If you want to build a model train display for a child, it's fine to make a simple layout for them. Just remember to leave enough room to change the tracks around, since he or she will probably have their own ideas about how to configure things.
Generally speaking, children aren't as worried about having everything look realistic and be built to scale. You can start with adding some things you already have on hand to your model train displays. Toy houses, cars and the like make great additions to a starter model train layout. Children can make changes to the layout later on if they want to update things later on.
By contrast, adults care about scale and realism and it's rare to find an adult who wants to have the houses and other buildings in their model train displays dwarfing their HO-scale trains! Hobbyists can build everything in their layouts or buy these items. However, most model train enthusiasts choose to buy some elements and build others. If you're interested in creating your own displays, then you'll need some basic tools to get started.

Model Train Displays
The Setup phase for your Model Railroads
We'll assume that you already have a model train, such as the Lionel trains, and some tracks handy. When setting up your model train layout, do it in a room where you'll have easy access to an electrical outlet. The room should be relatively clean and have a more or less constant temperature to ensure a longer life for your trains.
Rather than using your regular tools, you'll most likely want to have a tool kit which is just for your model railroading. A good starter kit will include a pair of scissors, a small hammer, wire cutters, needle nose pliers and mat knives. These are the tools you'll need to take care of building model train layouts and maintaining your displays.
If you want to use electronic components and other advanced designs, then you'll probably want a soldering iron, a couple of screwdrivers, a drill and a glue gun as well. Make sure to pick up track pins, glue sticks and solder too.

Building the Base Structure of your Model Train Display
To get started building your first layout, attach a piece of heavy paper or soft fiber board to a piece of plywood. This will keep your model train display stable and provide a surface to hold your track pins.
Following this, you'll configure your track and start adding features to your landscape. Leave plenty of room to change the layout of your tracks as you go; this will keep your display interesting.
