How to draw cartoons

Cartoon Drawing Secrets - how to draw cartoons

There are very few secrets to drawing cartoons - it's a fact that with some basic techniques using a small number of shapes (which you can already draw) and lots of practice, you can devise and draw cartoons worthy of reprinting in newspapers and other publications. It's easy learning how to draw cartoons.

The key is creating an outline first. A rough oval for the head, another for the body, a few sticks or ovals for arms and legs.

Only once you're happy with the overall shape or layout do you then add any detail. Do this and cartoon drawing becomes much much easier!

Cartoon Dogs & Cats, even Elephants!

Any animal, real or imagined, can be simply drawn as a cartoon using the same simple methods. Want to create a Cartoon Dog? It's simple, four rough circles on a piece of paper and your dog immediately starts to take shape.

Cartoon Cat? Two circles, add some ears and whiskers and you're almost finished. Elephants, Dragons, Fish, even Cartoon Cars and Motorbikes can be created in the same way.

OK! You asked for it - Homer Simpson!

Cartoon dog to follow soon...

Ok, so simple method to draw Homer - use the same method as always, that is start with simple shapes - dont try and draw the whole thing in one go. Start with a circle, draw a line 2/3 of the way across near the top, this gives you the outline for the top of his head. (Note his head sort of leans back at an angle)

Simple shapes, circles for the eyes, ear, and a couple of semi-circles for the top and bottom of the mouth, easy!

Well, it's easy if you try it a few times ;-) Have a go and see how you get on.

Your lens is fabulous! I am retired now, but used to draw cartoons for a school teacher's newsletter. Now, I draw my best cartoons while I'm talking on the telephone. When do you draw?
