Small PortionStudies actually show that if you are in an all-you-can-eat situation, you are going to eat larger portions of food even if you think you are watching what you eat. I know I have found this to be the worst circumstances to be in when I am trying to watch the calories that I am eating or cutting down on the amount of food. The best thing to do is to avoid these places altogether.

If you are going to eat out with friends or family, request a place that does not have a large spread of food. Smaller delis worked for me on the lunch hour and for dinners, places that offered an assortment of delicious salads or low-fat plates were my favorite places to go. These types of restaurants still are my favorite places to be, even though I have lost the weight that I planned, because I can still go out to eat and choose healthy foods in order to stay moving in the right direction.

This is not to say that you cannot eat at a buffet ever again. Of course, you will be able to grab an all-you-can-eat plate and serve yourself, but all in moderation and with healthy eating choices. After I studied the art of eating a well-balanced diet, buffets were much easier for me to manage. And, once you have learned how to eat healthy and lose the weight, dining at a buffet with the hundreds of choices of food will become less embarrassing and more fun.

Complex carbohydrates carry a bad name when it comes to eating healthy and weight loss, but they are actually good for you. I stayed away from what I thought were "bad carbs" for the better part of my life, but now, with a better understanding, I consume the right amount. There are simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. The simple carbohydrates are vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and also the fatty sweets; they contain simple sugars that the body absorbs quickly. The complex ones take a lot longer to break down into the body's sugar. Starchy veggies, whole grain breads and legumes are all complex carbohydrates that fuel the body and are vital to it properly functioning. It took quite a while to understand the concept, but once you learn how to eat the perfect balance of these different carbohydrates, with the equation being more complex and less simple, you will be on your way to a normal weight. On the other hand, I found that eating too many carbohydrates altogether can lead to gaining weight, because the body stores them like fat, similar to an excess of calories.
