Can you grow award winning, healthly, blossoming roses?

Many home and amateur gardeners often think that roses require special expertise and that you need to be a green fingered god to grow backyard roses that will put your neighbours to shame. But however you could not be further from the truth.

Most rose growing failures stem back to basic mistakes, which once identified are avoidable. As with all plants, Roses have basic requirements and once these requirements are met they flourish into the wonderful flower that they are.

There are many tricks of the trade which your local show winner and avid gardener would never dare to share. Why?

Well, what (nextdoor) expert wants the average Joe to cultivate award winning blooms. For this reason they often keep there secrets cooped up in they're dusty old brains.

Hope you enjoy what follows, and make full use of it.

Blossoming Roses.

Basic Tips

1. Purchase Quality Plants.

Purchase your roses from top quality sources that are specific to roses and other plants. These people know how to cultivate and supply a healthy product from the start. They will be able to give you advice on how best to care for your rose and will be able to help if you come across teething problems. Roses from suppliers such as these are normally graded "number 1," which is the highest grade in their industry, you can be certain that the rose comes from a high quality supplier. Plan to spend more on these plants but their size and overall quality more than off set the difference in price. Purchasing from such places you can be sure that they have been cared for even whilst on the sales shelf. However from other lower quality sources many plants end up with no care once placed on the shelf. The roses from the later type of supplier may be cheaper but generally you will find that they are smaller. Normally with these inferior plants you find yourself spending the first season looking after a sick plant and at the end of the summer, when all is said and done, you have gained nothing.

2. Make sure your soil is GOOD.

Although sandy loam has excellent drainage it does not have the basic organics required by roses. However this does not pose a problem; you can create your own through adding organics. These additions are required, not for the nutritional value, but to improve the condition of the soil. They retain water, buffer the soil against wide swings in pH, promote and enhance the growth of important microorganisms, and basically improve the tilth of the soil. Amend sandy loam with compost, horse manure, peat moss, etc, all of which are available locally.

Ideal pH for roses is a slightly acidic 6.5 to 6.9. Roses will tolerate pH down into the low 5's, but beyond that, they become malnourished even with nutrients present in the soil. This is due to the extreme acidity which prevents the rose from absorbing these nutrients. You can overcome naturally acidic soil with pH monitoring and adding lime if necessary, particularly in the fall as it takes several months for any change in pH to take place.

Tip. Horse manure can be used fresh and need not be aged. There are plenty of sources for horse manure in RI and stables are glad to be rid of it for a nominal charge or, in some cases, free for the taking.

3. SUN SUN SUN....(At least 6 hrs)

Plants that flower heavily need a lot of sun. Roses require a minimum of six hours of daily sunshine to truly reach their flowering capabilities. However, it is useful to know that varieties that have fewer petals in the bloom will tolerate the shade more than heavily petalled roses which need ample amounts of heat and light to open properly. The color of the bloom is also affected by the amount of sun%u2026the more sun, the brighter the color.

Tip. Try growing roses in containers. This way they can be moved from place to place in a shady yard thus gaining additional sun exposure

4. Water Water Water.

Roses have a need of water and plenty of it. It is hard to over-water roses which are planted in amended sandy loam. How much is enough? Don't let the soil become dry at the base of the rose. In cooler weather, irrigate a couple of times per week. In the heat of the summer, everyday is not too much.

Tip. It is much better to give the plant a deep soaking, 4-5 gallons, twice per week than to lightly water everyday.

5. Food Food Food.

Flowering plants like roses require regular feeding all season. Begin fertilizing when new spring growth reaches an inch or more, usually around the begining of May. Feed large roses 1 cup of 10-10-10 monthly through August, then stop. For miniature roses cut the regimen in half. Triple 10 is a balanced fertilizer that provides the essential elements of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium that roses need for robust health. It is inexpensive and available everywhere. Augment this with water-soluble fertilizers applied at the recommended rates. Specialty fertilizers with trace elements are good, but not essential. roses can't read and they eat anything.

Tip. Cutting the dosages in half and feeding twice as often is a superior method of fertilizing if you have the time.

6. Insect and Disease Control.

Insects can be controlled as they appear with a variety of methods. Control of fungi, on the other hand, needs to be preemptive as blackspot spores, for instance, are present on the foliage 30 days before the spots occur. There are spray products available in garden centers that effectively control all the common fungi in the home rose garden. Follow the instructions and apply at the recommended rates.

An alternative to this is to plant varieties that have a demonstrated resistance to disease and maintain a clean garden with ample air circulation. Disease resistance has become a primary objective of modern rose hybridizing and resistant varieties are introduced every year.

Tip. Attack Japanese beetles in the larva stage in the soil with milky spore disease or lawn care treatments. This takes time but has long lasting positive results.

Would'nt it be wonderfull to have your roses looking like these :)

Choosing your roses.

The variety of roses you can grow in your own garden is huge. With so many to choose from, routing out just the right ones might just seem a little more like work than play. To make this process easier, here are a few important factors to help you narrow

Color

Will the color of your roses affect your garden? For color ideas, look at rose catalogs, at nurseries, and at your neighbours' gardens.
You should consider the colours of nearby plants and flowers that will be sharing the garden. Will the assortment of colours look good together, or will they clash? For some gardeners, color is a priority; for others, it's no big deal.

Climate

Choosing the right roses for your particular climate zone is essential. In order for roses to grow healthy and bloom generously, they must be able to adjust to your climate.
If your climate is too hot or too cold, or has the wrong amount of humidity, it could weaken your roses and make them vulnerable to pests and diseases.

Size

The size of the roses you choose is also very important. Consider the height of the rose at full growth. If the rose grows 15 feet tall, will it look unattractive in your garden? Remember, roses vary in size. While some roses may grow up to 8 feet, others can grow as high as 20 feet.
Measure the area of your garden prior to choosing your roses. Compare your width and height measurements with roses you'd like to purchase. Your roses will need plenty of space to grow as well as room for exposure to the air.
If you have only a small amount of space to dedicate to roses, you may want to grow miniature roses. These roses do not take up much space and they are easy to plant and care for.

Maintenance

How much time will you be able to spend maintaining your roses? Are you one of those people who lives to be in the garden, or are you more of a low-maintenance gardener?

There are several types of roses which are very high-maintenance. Although they'll be dazzling in your garden, they'll require a lot of your time. The classification known as "Modern Roses" are very stunning, long blooming, and highly fragrant; however, they are very high maintenance and are prone to disease.

Relocating your Rose

I read a nice little guide on one of the many forums out there concerning transferring your rose to a new location. So here it is %u2026%u2026..

Dig a large hole around the rose and try not to cut off roots, that are larger than a
pencil. Make sure you replant it in good soil, aka, got some manure in it ,and a Startup
Fertilizer in the hole to be transplanted in, mixed with 50/50 , manure,
Horse , Steer ,Turkey. manure. About a 1/2 cup Startup Fertilizer mixed in to
the soil, per 5 gallons of soil.
Maybe pick off all the leaves before you do it a week before.(Forces it into
dormancy)

Hope you find this of use :)
