Start Home Based Business - A Gap in the Market Does not Mean There is Always a Market in the Gap

Consider this, just because there is a gap in the market does not mean there is always a market in the gap.

If you start a home based business and spot something that other people are not promoting, ask yourself why? Is it because people have missed out, or is it simply because there is no money to be made in that market?

Let us go to a favorite website of mine for market research dmoz.org and have a look at how you can use it.

Research method

As a start home based business example, I am going to go and look at the golf market. What I want to do is get close to the people in that market and find out their issues and problems so I can start trying to find products to promote to those people to help solve their particular problems.

What you do is you find the relevant category. For golf, start out in the sports category. We click on that. That then takes us to this listing of sports, and you can see down here there is a listing here for golf. We click on that. Then we get taken to this section.

Chats and forums

What I want you to do for your particular area is find this link. Every area will have this link, chats and forums. Chats and forums are places where people go to talk about their interests, so there are going to be chats and forums for pretty much every interest area. Let's go and click on that and I will show you what that shows us.

This then gives us a list of forums where golfers go online to talk about their interests. This is the endgame. Once you get to this stage, you can go into these sites, join these sites, pretty much all of them will be free, and you can see what other golfers or your potential customers are talking about on these forums.

You can start to find out what are their questions, what are their problems they are looking to solve, what are their frustrations, what products are they buying already, what products don't they like, what products did they like but they found gaps with that you can maybe tap into?

So you need to go and spend a little bit of time snooping on your potential customers. You can do this in any market.

That is a little bit of an exercise for you on the start home based business market research front. What else can you do? What I recommend you do is go and find newsletters or e-zines for your market.

Newsletters and e-zines

I am just going to search golf newsletter subscribe. I am going to go to Google.com and just type that in the search box and we will see here by putting those words in: golf, newsletter, subscribe.

I get over a half million results at the time of my doing this. Scroll down and you can see: newsletter subscription, newsletter golf subscription, golf newsletter, golf magazine, golf newsletter, golf newsletter.

I could go down now, if I was interested in promoting in this market, and join a lot of these things to see what people are selling.

What affiliate products are they promoting?
How are they promoting these affiliate products?
What are they actually putting in the e-mails?
What is their website like?
What products have they created themselves, etc.?

You can do the market research. A quick guide to see if there is money in your market is to go into Google and type phrases about your market into the search box and if there are any adverts on the side, where it says sponsored links, if there are adverts on the side it means there is money.

If you can see people are advertising, paying money for a particular phrase like golf newsletter. There must be money even in creating a golf newsletter.

If you go in and put your start home based business market in, if you put in miniature hedgehog knitting and it does not come up with any adverts, or only one or two, the chances are that nobody is making money in that market and it is not a good idea to go after that.

Amazon

Another bit of market research you can do, go over to Amazon.com. I am sure you have heard of Amazon.com, famous for books, but they sell absolutely everything now.

You can go to Amazon.com. Here I am in the sports and outdoors golf section, and what it does is it actually shows you in order of best sellers, what is selling the most.

You can see here I have gone into golf, there is a best selling item related to golf. There is the second best selling item and so on.

You can scroll down and see what the hot items are in your particular market, based on global selling trends. It is a great way for you to see what is a hot selling item in your market at the moment.

As I say, you can do this in pretty much any area: shoes, books, video games, digital stuff, music, sport, home and hobbies stuff, computers and office, electronics, home and gardening, groceries, health and beauty, fashion, tools, cars.

Anything you can think of you get a best seller list pretty much from Amazon.com. It is a great way to fine tune your market research to see what people are buying.

Wordtracker - keyword research

A final tool for your start home based business is Wordtracker.com. At the site there is a free trial. I recommend you go and take that.

What Wordtracker.com does is it tells you what people are typing into search engines. If you put in a phrase like golf into Wordtracker, it will come back and it will probably give you several thousand phrases related to the word golf and it will tell you for each one how many people have typed that into a search engine in the past 60 days.

It shows you trends. It also shows you where the traffic is coming from, what people are typing in. Again, it gives you more market research information on your particular market.

Put the phrases in for your market. Find out what people are looking for. Find out what people are buying.

That is another tool that you can use to do your market research. It is called Wordtracker, and you can get it from Wordtracker.com.

Go where the money is

What you are really trying to do in this start home based business exercise is very, very simply go where the money is. Go where the money is. It is as simple as that. You are trying to find where people are, where the hungry crowd is, where that money has been spent, and then try and get into that market by selling other people's products, affiliate products in that market.

To begin with all you are doing is you are selecting a market to go after based on:

1) Profitability,

2) Potential passion you might have in that particular area.

At this point is it worth me saying that you have got to remain focused in this? Maintain your focus. Do not go off and start doing what I call a shotgun approach, where you start saying I am going to go wide like this and start promoting a hundred different things and actually not hit very much at all. This is what many people who are unsuccessful online do, don't be one of them!

Do not go shotgun. Instead what you want to do is adopt a sniper approach, where you just pick one very small market and you go very targeted, pinpoint accuracy right onto the target, so that you make that money.

Don't do a shotgun approach. Do not go and promote golf stuff and dog training stuff and home and hobby stuff and internet marketing stuff. Go sniper. Go narrow, narrow. Pick one particular market.

I think one of the biggest mistakes that newbies make online when they are trying to get to making that money, making that fast cash, is going off in too many different directions.

They say, I am going to promote this, I am going to promote stuff about list building, I am going to promote traffic products, I am going to promote stuff about affiliate marketing. You go off and say Maybe I will do something about golf and maybe I will do something about dog training.

What happens is each of these you can only spend a little bit of time on each of these, and as a result nothing happens. You do not get finished.

What you really need to do is just focus on one area, bearing in mind it has got to be profitable and ideally you must have a passion for it or at least an interest in it.
