How to Persuade Someone to do What you Want

So, you too want to learn how to persuade someone, and get them to do anything you want or agree with you? Then one of the most important things you must definitely learn is the art of PERSUASION.

Being able to persuade or convince anyone to agree with you and follow your requests is a powerful skill that can really help you in all areas of your life: at work, at home, and even in your social life.

Whether you need to learn persuasion skills for personal or professional reasons, you've definitely came to the right place! Below you will find some of the basic steps on how to persuade someone that will help you improve your influence power!

1. How to Persuade Someone - The Reciprocation Principle

If you do Something for Me, I Feel Obligated to do Something for You

Treating people the way we are treated is a universal human tendency. People tend to respond to positive behavior received with positive behavior in return.

What can you do then? Start giving something: Give information, give free samples, give a positive experience to people and they will want to give you something in return.

When you take the lead and start giving first, you build in a moment where people will feel compelled from social norms and customs to give back.

Examples:
  • If you want to persuade someone to buy something from you, give free samples of your products. This will encourage people to buy the full product in return, if they see that the sample you provided them is good.

  • If you want to get favors from other people, start helping them in needy or desperate situations and once your opportunity comes, ask for a favor. They'll be grateful to return it, if they can really afford to do it.
PD: Just because you know that this principle works, it doesn't mean that you should have any hidden intentions to help someone. You should help someone sincerely without expecting anything in return from him or her and earn yourself good karma.

2. How to Persuade Someone - The Authority Principle

People are more likely to follow the advice of experts.

This principle it's all about credibility. People who are perceived as experts have a greater ability to persuade others.

This is because people feel more comfortable dealing with individuals who know what they're doing or at least, those who seem to know what they're doing.

There's no way you can even try to tell someone what to do if you don't see yourself as a figure of authority. People with no power are usually taken for granted and cast aside.

The funny thing is, you can't exert authority just by telling everyone how powerful you are (although to some extent, that tactic works). You have to show them more than you have to tell them.

3. How to Persuade Someone - The Liking Principle

People are more likely to listen to you and follow your requests if they trust, respect, or like you FIRST.

"People prefer to say 'yes' to those they know and like, they are also more likely to favor those who are physically attractive, similar to themselves, or who give them compliments." Cialdini says.

People who are liked generate affection and good feelings. And people who feel good about themselves are more likely to comply with your wishes. If you make people feel good in any way, they will tend to listen and remember you.

So, How can you make somebody to like you?

1. Listening.- I mean.. You must really listen!!. Focus on finding the good stuff in people, then let them know about it. Be genuine and sincere when you do this.

2. Find what you have in common with another person and let him/her know about it. Having common things creates a positive bond with others.

4. How to Persuade Someone - The Social Proof Principle

"If other people are doing something, it must be ok for me to do it too."

This principle establishes that when people find themselves not knowing what to do next in any given situation, they tend to look to those around them to guide their decisions and actions. They especially want to know what everyone else is doing - especially their peers.

So, if you want to persuade someone to do something, you have to know that people will be more likely to comply with your request if you make them belief by providing them proof that similar peers are complying with it too.

5. How to Persuade Someone - The Consistency and Commitment Principle

We're more likely to do something after we've agreed to it verbally or in writing.

This persuasion principle establishes that a person needs to remain consistent with what he or she has said or promised. People who say one thing and then do another are generally disaproved by their peers.

So, in order to feel accepted in society, people will do their best to stick to their words. It's a matter of honor and integrity.

If you get someone to voluntarily commit to a course of action, even better if you get him or her to put that commitment in writing and making it public; you will dramatically increase your ability to not only persuade someone, but also actually have them follow through.
Apply these 5 basic principles and your influence over other people will increase immeasurably. You'll have much more success in all areas of life.

Imagine getting anything you want from others, where everyone wins.
Imagine having the power to persuade anyone to your way of thinking and do anyhing you want.

If you're constantly unhappy and frustrated with everything going on around you, then developing your abilities of persuasion is the right step to take.

And there will never be a better time to do that than right now!
