Roasted Chestnuts are Delicious

Not sure how to roast chestnuts? Don't worry. Contrary to a popular Christmas song, you don't need an open fire to roast savory chestnuts this holiday season. Your oven will do just fine, in fact, it may do better since you don't have to worry as much about burning them, or yourself for that matter.

Roasted chestnuts are a traditional holiday treat that has been enjoyed for hundreds of years. Chestnuts are available to buy between the months of October and March but are most abundantly used during the holidays.

Roasted chestnuts can be enjoyed plain, right out of the oven, and also in many chestnut recipes.

When Roasting chestnuts, always start with fresh, blemish-free chestnuts.

Preheat your oven to 475 degrees Fahrenheit.

Chestnuts must be prepared by slicing before cooking. Beware, unsliced chestnuts can explode causing not only a safety hazard but a big mess to boot!

Using the tip of a sharp knife, carefully, cut a slit across the rounded side of your chestnut.

After slicing, arrange your chestnuts in a single layer on a shallow pan, such as a cookie sheet.

Bake at 475 degrees, for approximately 20 to 25 minutes, until the outer shell and the inner brown skin peels away from the nut easily.

Serve roasted chestnuts while still warm for best taste.

Be sure to peel away the outer shell and the inner brown skin before eating roasted chestnuts.

Chestnuts are very high in starch. Most people will only eat a few at a sitting but there are a few people who just can't stop once they get started.

To avoid stomach cramps, never eat raw chestnuts.

Remember to always store unused fresh, cooked, and/or roasted chestnuts in the refrigerator.

The Christmas Song

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire ~ song lyrics

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire was composed by Torme and Wells in 1946.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother's child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you

I found your lens in the search engine, because I was looking for "Could chestnuts cause stomach cramps".
I ate 20 or so raw chestnuts, over the period of a week and what a tummy ache, I have!
Oh, they taste so good, but no more raw for me! :) Thanks for the info. 5*****'s

We're going to be home for Christmas, this year...first time in about 5 years!! And I think, in celebration, I'm going to order some chestnuts and roast them. That just sounds like so much fun. So glad to know that they need to be stored in the fridge! So this will be another featured lens on my newest (yet to be published-hopefully tonight) lens on the Best Fruitcake Recipe Ever. Thanks!
